My friends have had to take on an Italian Greyhound when her owner sadly died last week. They already have a very old and poorly lurcher of their own which is deaf and has limited vision. Earlier this week my friends returned to the dog's previous owner's home to sort out the lady's affairs, leaving the Italian Greyhound with neighbours who were strangers to her and taking their lurcher with them. Consequently the little dog escaped, crossing a main road and ran around the village, badly biting me (who she knows) when I tried to clip a lead on her and disappeared until late in the evening after having half the village out looking for her.
My question is should my friends, as I have pointed out to them, have taken the greyhound back to her home to be shown her owner was no longer there or be kept away from the situation, as my friends did? I'd appreciate some feedback as this is causing us all some anxiety. Many thanks.

I don't think she'd have understood empty house meant no owner :( shed likely just think her owner out or in bath or something.
better really to keep her away in my view to try and break off the connection to that house.
different had the lady died at home, then it does pay to let the animals see the body as that they do seem to understand. I did it with my Grans dog and cats when she died at home and also my own dog who loved her dearly saw her and by the way they all flattened and retreated after sniffing her they did know.
a reassurance they could do for the little dog is to collect up some of the old ladies clothing to give her items for her bed , same as one does with a pup taking a piece of the dams bedding to give a pup a bit of reassurance.
its not easy. glad the little one came to no harm during her flight and I hope your bite heals quickly.
My mum's dog left home when she died, he visited once a week checked the bedroom and went back to the neighbour again. He lived on another 4 years seemingly quite happy to just have a look once a week. He was not in the houses when Mum died so i think having a check was his way of making sure he wasnt defaulting on his part of their "love" affair.
They were devoted Mum & Jack.
