Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / raw feeding surprise

Not sure if this is common at all but i have recently started feeding raw and this month i bought pheasant.
i have found now a few pellet shots in the meat, this has been in the bottom of the bowl so not sure how many have been eaten. they are tiny things but it still concerns me.
I assume they are made of lead, which as i have such big dogs and they are tiny pellets i have found i doubt they would get lead poisioning but i chose to raw feed so they would be eating natural foods with no chemicals etc... so not happy about funding these pellets at all. a have stopped feeding the pheasant foe now i was wondering if this is normal to find?

Where did you get the Pheasant from? You will get buck shot in some game that you buy. But I thought it would have been removed if it was intended for human consumption? You could break a tooth on that, not to mention ingesting them. What about asking the people where you got it from?

it was from a pet food raw supplier, not meant for human consumption.

No, that's an accepted risk with shot game. Nobody has the time to dissect the bird/animal to search for all the pieces of shot!

My husband eats a lot of pheasant and the ones he purchases that have been shot always contain a few pellets. If he can't get any from our butcher, he has a different supplier (chap working for our butcher) and was surprised there was no lead shot in these birds. When he raised the question he was told that it was because they were farmed birds.

When people eat game they leave the pellets on the side of the plate (and bits of broken tooth if they were careless!). It sounds as though your dogs have done the same. It probably wouldn't be good to eat too much shot.

hmmmmm i think i may be removing pheasant from nmy feed order

Ours is usually roadkill, so free of shot!

I wouldnt worry about it really - as you are noticing it in the bowl your dogs are evidently smart enough to leave it. Any they swallow accidentally will come out t'other end (As it does with people if they dont notice and spit the shot out).

Never heard of anyone, dog or human, dying of lead poisoning as a result of eating shot.

Swans die if they ingest the lead shot left by anglers.

Yes.. but they eat a lot more of it and they are smaller so it doesnt go through the system so well.

Swans are poisoned because the shot stays in the crop & doesn't pass through the body as with mammals

- By CarlyMallie [gb] Date 28.09.09 15:01 UTC
