Does anyone know a good technique for painting a skirting board without getting any paint on the carpet? The carpet is stuck down on the edges and is dark blue while the skirting board is white!

I put masking tape all round the room when I paint the skirting boards - worked so far.  Wait until the paint is fully dry before removing or you might pull some paint off.

yes masking tape, i did this last week when i painted my sons room i also used it around the top of the skirting board for a nice crisp edge and it didnt pull off the paint thank god.

You can also have a large piece of cardboard, push down on the carpet and paint ,.
this is also o.k. for window frames, it stops the paint on the windows.
Tape is the one mostly used

If you are flush nip into a carpet place and get the sticky (looks like cling film) plastic they put down to protect carpets, gives you a lot more space to splash paint around, comes on a roll.
