I only ever use Panacur on the reduced dose for last 2 weeks of pregnancy, I always use Drontal for my actual worming so was hoping someone could offer some advice please?

My bitch was wormed with Drontal on mating and is now 8 weeks pregnant. She has been having Panacur on the reduced dose for last week and a half or so and this morning I noticed a big fat worm in her poo. I'm thinking I obviously need to give her a full dose and then carry on with the reduced dose in a day or 2. Anyway, looking at the instructions I need 1 sachet for every 4kg and she is 48kg so that is 12 sachets. That seems an awful lot - Is it safe to give her that as a single dose? There's nothing on there about maximum dosage or anything so I guess it is safe, just wanted some wise words from someone!!

I would check with your vet before you give her the full dose.

I only ever use the liquid 10% suspension, much cheaper per dose than granules.

I bulk buy and the dosage for sheep is 1 tenth that per kg of bodyweight so it must be pretty powerful stuff.

If she has passed a worm then it is doing what it is supposed to and I certainly would not up the dosage in pregnancy.  If you feel you need to wait until a few days after whelping.

I have used Panacur all their lives and have never seen a worm.  The only time I have seen adult worms when using Panacur was with a 6 week old rescue litter of GSD who were obviously full of worms (pot bellied, anaemic etc).

In the above case the pups were being given the half dose every day for three days, after the first day they were evacuating the dead worms from every orifice and the vet told my friend not to give them the third dose as they simply couldn't handle it so poorly were they with the huge worm burden.

They were fed up and made better before being wormed again two weeks later with  o adult worms seen.

Thanks for that. I have never seen worms in any of my dogs poo, only ever in my cat's vomit, that was why I was concerned.

Without being too graphic, I presume the worm was still alive because I saw it but by the time I had been to get a poo bag to clean up, the worm had gone but there was a whole in the poo like it had burried inside? Gross I know, sorry if that was too much detail!

She was sick last night and there were no worms in that so I know she's not completely riddled.

Are you sure it wasn't an earthworm or was this a totally fresh pressie?

ROFL!! No it was fresh!!

The only other thing I could think, as I didn't actually see it moving, was if a bird had spotted it and pecked it out by the time I got back?! Either that or it definately was alive. I wasn't going to start searching through to find it again though. Eugh.

This sounds really silly now like I am completely taking the p**s!!! :) I'm honestly not!

A friend of mine had litter recently and used Panacur to worm the puppies and it didn't work. She stuck to the correct dose's at the correct times exactly as instructed but all the puppies got worms. A problem she has never has before and this was very stressful for the puppies and her! She complained several times to Panacur send them information on when and how much she wormed etc. She didn't get very far with that but came to the conculsion that either she got a duff batch of the wormer or the mother of the puppies built up and resistants to Panacur. So be careful and maybe change her wormer to Drontol or another decent one.

I recently was looking after two puppies for a friend, they had worms eeek! Found them in their poo's aswell so I immeditalty wormed and frontlined them. My own dogs never get worms, I was rather annoyed to say the least and are now out of pocket, atleast the puppies are ok though.

I think Panacur is the only wormer licensed for use on in-whelp bitches.

I have always used Panacur for my bitches in whelp and for puppies and have never had a problem.  I use panacur paste for the puppies as it is so easy to give to them.

I am sure when I emailed the vet at an online vet pharmacy regarding drontal, I was told drontal is perfectly safe for a bitch in whelp.

Use During Pregnancy and Lactation
Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant animals for roundworms.
The product may be used during lactation.
Do not exceed recommended dose when treating pregnant bitches.

We had Milbemax from our vet for our most recent litter.

Due to the nature of worms in dogs ie some remain dormant in the bitch until she becomes pregnant.  While they are at this stage they are immune to wormers.  Once pregnant they start to emerge and will be found in the bitch and can be passed onto the puppies.  While feeding the pups the mother will continue to infect the puppies.  This is why it is important to carry on with the recommended regime.

I use Panacur liquid 10% on a regular basis.

I start pregnant bitches at day 40 of gestation, and daily then until 2 days post whelping.

This regime is supposed to give you pups born 98% worm free, and I have to be honest and say I've never seen a thing.  My pups are started at day 14 on the 3 day regime.

I know everyone has their own favourite regime, but I have had so much success with the liquid, that it would be difficult to persuade me to change!  :-)
