Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / problems getting bitch pregnant

I own a very nice bitch, good show dog, hips, eyes etc all tested and fine. I have just completed my last attempt at getting her pregnant and failed again :( Now I just want to know 'why'.
Firstly she does ovulate and has been taken to the proven dog bang on time (progesterone testing) About 10 days after mating she develops a pale green discharge (no smell) and that seems to be it. So this last time I have been prepared and she was put on a course of antibiotics, from day one of her season until 3 weeks after mating. All in all she has had 5 weeks on them. But again 1O days or so after mating the discharge was there. I can't understand this, in the face of all those antibiotics it still arrives bang on time. She has no problem with her seasons at all. Its only after mating that this happens.

This last time on seeing the discharge, the vet gave her some different antibiotics to run alongside of the others and scanned her to make sure the infection was not in her uterus, which it wasn't.

I should also say, she was swabbed before mating to make sure she had nothing there beforehand which she didn't.  The vet is saying, its one of those things, which yes it maybe but there must be a reason for it.

Have you tried the Canine Herpes Vaccination?

No thats something I didn't do. Thought I had covered all possible potential problems but missed that one.

I knew it affected pups, fading pups etc but I didn't realise it affected fertility. How would I know she had a problem with it? She does have little places by her nose where her skin is red and a bit hairless, I have been treating this with Advocate from the vets. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, its the only thing that I can say is actually affecting her at the moment and even they come and go and they are very few and small.

One of mine missed twice although i did everthing by the book , then i was told about the herpes vaccine , third and last try (she would have been too old to try again by that i mean over 5) i did have her vaccinated , maybe  a fluke but she took and had 5 healthy pups.

rocknrose,
I too have had this problem with my girls. It took three missed matings, two different bitches, before
I thought of the Canine Herpes. Vaccinated my girl at the next attempt, and sure enough,
she had a nice litter without any problems.
You vaccinate twice, approximately 10 days after the season starts, and around two weeks before the due date of whelping.

If you have more than one brood bitch, remember if one has it, it's likely they all do.

thank you very much for your replies, its very much appreciated :) I do have a similar problem with a younger bitch so I think you may well be right. My last attempt was going to be my last but I shall have another go and add the vaccine to my list of to do's.

thanks again
