can someone tell me if chalking of dogs coats in any way is permissable in the show ring. you see white powder/chalk for sale on the trade stands at champ shows, so is this allowed.
thanks
You are allowed to chalk BUT it isn't allowed to stay in the dogs coat at time of exhibition in the ring.
So you must remove all the chalk from the dogs coat before it goes into the ring to be exhibited...
Of course there are plenty that will leave it in the dog's coat (in many breeds)....but they are at risk of being DQ'd if their dog is coat tested
as it's against KC rules and regs.

thank you boxacrazy for replying and please dont think i am getting at you or anyone in anyway, these are just question that i am curious about, i have breeds that do not require chalking.
if you have to remove all the chalk before going in the ring what is the point of putting it on in the first place.
surely if it is used to hide tear stains or to make the coat whiter the chalk must have to remain on the coat when the dog is in the ring ?
Chalk/talc was used to absorb moisture to dry out the coat and brighten 'dull' whites.
Chalk is also used for stripping it's gives the groomer extra grip on their fingers.
As I've indicated some people do leave the chalk in their dogs coat but they are at risk of disqualification.
You can often tell those that have used 'lipstick, powder n paint' as quite often it get's left on the owners/handlers
clothes when the dogs brush past them or other unsuspecting passer-by.
What's the point? - Perhaps it makes people feel happier/better or it's how they've been taught by their mentors and they don't
know any different?

I am always amazed at the grooming tables full of 'powders and sprays'. As this seems to be the 'norm' for an awful lot of exhibitors.
I have not been aware of it ever being challenged though I am quite a newcomer.
I have been to 1 show and saw a standard poodle's 'mane' being openly sprayed with an aerosol can which i assumed was hairspray .
