Hi, we tried to breed our bitch earlier this year and didnt get a succsessful mating but the stud dog mated 2 days before we tried to use him on a different girl and have just had pups, because he had just been mated would this affect hes lack of interst in our girl?
many thanks

2 days should be long enough for a stud dogs sperm count to be back up to a good level and as for showing a lack of interest in your bitch, its sounds more as if your bitch was not ready.

I don't own a stud dog myself, but IME it wouldn't make any difference to the failed mating with your girl. A stud dog that i used had a mating the previous day and was still very keen to mate with my girl. We then returned for a 2nd mating 48 hours later and he once again was very keen.
Just a thought but could it perhaps have not been the correct mating days for your girl? or occasionally it can be a case of they just don't 'fancy' each other.

No. I often think the more they get it the more they want it.
Yes I would think also she wasn't quite ready. I had a dog once that was being used at stud that showed no interest whatsoever in the bitch on the evening, next morning he was absolutely crazy!! They mated and went on the have pups. I don't know whether its true or not but they say a good stud's nose can pinpoint ovulation. My vet poo poo's this theory saying if it were true progesterone tests would ever have been invented but my lad certainly knew something had changed within those 12 hours.

Well animals have been getting it right long before blood testing.

My boy tells me when one of my bitches is about to come into season, then he completely ignores them until (what he considers) mating day then ...........he is wild :-) and has to be isolated for about 4-5 days.
He is the same with outside bitches, mildly interested but completely refuses to mate until they come on the correct day - then BINGO.
