I've been thinking of this for quite a while. We are told from all direction s to have our KC registered(plus other legitimate registries)pedigree dogs health tested & that research should be done, but who should fund the research ?

I know most Breed Clubs have funded/are funding some form of research directly or indirectly(via the KC charitable trust etc), the KC themselves have funded & are funding lots of research, also some breeders & exhibitors have also raised funds.

But what about the pet breeders that KC register their puppies, they can take advantage of the schemes once they are up & running without ever helping to develop the schemes/research, thus enabling them to gain financially by getting more money for their puppies. what about the people who buy their puppies, the gain by having a puppy that will not develop certain conditions &/or is less likely to have certain genetic conditions should they help too ?

Should people who do not health test be penalized by the KC by charging more to register their puppies on a basic register, because they have not bothered to health test & the extra be channelled to the research for the breed ????

I know what I think, but are others opinions ?

I already suggested this to the KC via email a good while back, good year to two years ago (and verbally to one on the KC committee who advised that I email).
That the registration cost should rise and then all that register pups  (regardless of their breeders origen, morals and ethics) will be contributing towards health testing/research in all breeds. That's even if they don't do health testing on their own stock etc.

I don't think I even had a response (I'd have to check through some old CD's to confirm if my memory cells are correct as change of computer since I did email).

This was always my issue over the ABS, my view is that those with high standards involving much more expense should actually be rewarded.

It rankles that someone can breed a litter having spent little in the way of health costs and proving their dogs worth can get the same price for their pups, as the public don't realise.

The Kennel club maintain that they do not want to disenfranchise these breeders but hope that somehow they may want to up their anti, the only incentive for them to do so is money, so maybe a reduction on KC charges for those who health test, and a mandatory contribution to wards health research from those who don't?.

After all at one time the Kennel Club were refunding the registration fee if the new owner took up KC Insurance (I never took them up on it).

At the moment there is an unregistered litter in my breed being sold for less than a £100 less than the going rate, yet the person selling them has no registration fees and has saved more than a £1000 on the litter by not health testing the parents.

I agree with your idea but think that the pet breeders will just use the 'other' registration or not register at all.  No loss as far as I'm concerned but Joe Public doesn't seem to be concerned about KC Reg as much as they used to.  They just want a pet puppy when they want it and don't see the need for anything more.  If they can save £100 then they think they've got a bargain.  They think that because their dog has a pedigree then they're all the same! :(
Those who do understand are still actively seeking out breeders who health test and have experience with their breed.
