Hi, Had my bitch ultrasound scanned last week at 4 1/2 weeks and vet said no pups. I felt deflated but not unduly concerned as I know of a number of incidences where this has happened before and on 2nd scan pups were showing. However, I took her for a 2nd scan this morning (5 1/2 weeks) and the outcome is the same, no pups.
Has anyone on the forum had experience of 2 negative scans but the bitch producing a pup(s)?
She is showing signs of mammary growth, teats are very pink, and her whole demeanour suggests she's pregnant. I accept that we may be building up to a false pregnancy, but I also feel that I have to continue in terms of worming, exercise regimes, etc as though she is in pup. I'm well aware that vets and breeders have been caught out before now. I would be interested to know if anyone has been in a similar situation. I have only just started to slightly increase her feed, approx 5%, so will continue with this, just in case.

Yes I have had a vet say " No pups" and then she ( a boxer) went on to produce 6 bitches - all good sized.
To be fair though, I knew she was pregnant ( I've had many litters before) and the vet was just not good at scanning. If it were an experienced untrasonographer then I probably would think a pregnancy unlikely....sorry.

Hi toolz and sal, thanks for responses, were yours double scans? I know it's quite frequent for vets not to pick up pups at the 4-5 week stage, though they would rather like you to think that they're right and there aren't any ;-) It was an experienced vet who scanned her on both occasions, but then how many dogs these vets scan I don't know, so that would determine how experienced they are in scanning. As said, she's showing me all the signs of being pregnant, two breeder friends have looked at her and were convinced she's pregnant. I am resigned to the fact that she probably isn't in pup ... am dreading making the phone calls this evening, but I guess the day of whelping will ultimately tell (which is what I should have waited for in the first place ... curiosity, plus a real need to know, got the better of me! And I can't say that I'm now any better off :-().
My farming friend very successfully picks up pups with a pig scanner! Sadly her husband dropped it earlier in the year whilst scanning their sheep!!
Hi Sal, just out of curiosity what make is the sheep scanner?

I would only
just be getting the feeling a bitch was pregnant around four and a half to five and a half weeks and am pretty sure by 6.
One thing I'm very wary of,is a bitch looking pregnant before that time...usually a phantom in my experience.
I would assume that you will know before her due date as the mucoid discharge is almost never present in a phantom pregnancy.
> were yours double scans?
No I didn't return as I was pretty sure she was and had lost any confidence in the vet.

no idea T.. i use a lady who is very good.

T, I had 2 scans back in April on my newfoundland both negative ...... she went 4 days overdue and produced 2 beautiful enourmous puppies!!! Go with your instinct

Friend, who also posts on here, had her Cocker checked by a very experienced sheep scanner in Scotland and was told no pups and she went on to have a decent sized litter.
westhamexcile - obviously yours is the answer I've been waiting for :-) :-)
We'll just carry on as we are, getting prepared but not feeding too heavily, and just keeping fingers crossed. Thanks for the response.

Yes friend used a sheep scanner man, was told first time definitely no pups, second time at 7 weeks didn't think there was any still but maybe expect one, she had a normal sized litter for the breed! My friends showed me some time later a photo of her girl at 5 weeks and it was evident that she was well and truly pregnant!
