Does anyone have any knowledge of how you go about requesting a preservation order on  trees.?

We have  massive trees at the end of our garden which I love it gives us privacy mainly during the summer months apart from beautiful to look at !

A good few years ago the neighbours at the other end of our garden (the tree comes between both gardens neither in thiers or ours <long story> the fence meets the tree half and half) anyway they had bloke in to cut the tree back of course I went mad and they left it alone.
I have always said over the years I am going to get those trees protected but never have... I notice today that the neighbour has sold thier house and am worried that the new owners may decide they dont like the trees and we may go through the same scenario with them so I want to do my best to protect the trees. these tree do not block off any light or shade any part of the gardens as they are very big gardens set back a good distace from the houses.

Hubby thinks I am crazy and am turning into a tree hugger!

You have to apply to your local council - see following link

Contact your local Tree Preservation Officer & he/she will tell you if there is a current order on the trees for starters, if there isn't then you can request that he visit to consider make a TPO for the tree(s)

Can't remember exactly where you live Roni but you can look on your Local Authority's website for details of their Conservation areas

im sure a lot would depend on the species as well. if its an ash then not a chance!! if its something more worthy then maybe.

I'm not sure whether the species actually matters that much it seems to have a lot to do with how the trees fit in with the environment so you may get an order on some trees just because they have been there a long time and cutting them down will change the 'look' of the area.

The other issue is that although it's probably worth getting an order to discourage people cutting the trees, it doesn't mean they won't.  Cutting down a preserved tree results in a fine but the fine is very small compared to the profit that can be made from land and builders are  not averse to 'accidentally' cutting through roots to kill a tree.

Or pouring noxious things down by the roots to kil it.
