Just dropped Whistler off at his groomers and they are going potty about one in three dogs are crawling with fleas. Which means Hillary is having to wash dozens of towells a day and keep cleaning and disenfecting the holding cages. She had a lovely (wet) dog in the sink and they were hopping everywhere! According to Hillary the vet has said that frontline does not appear to be working at all this year.
Im no expert but we Advantix and they have garlic & fenugreek tablets daily anyway i have never seen a flea on my two.
Just a thought here in sunny Hampshire.

no doubt you will see them when he gets back from the groomers then!!! :(
Not so sure if its the frontline not working as just a general population explosion in fleas. In the last week we have had masses of people coming in with flea problems, some use frontline, some use practic, and some use advantix. Myself included, my dogs were treated with advantix and yet we still had a problem with fleas. They have no all had stronghold and the house has been sprayed so it seems to be under control now.
I use frontline and have since i got my dog 2 1/2 years ago. As yet (touch wood) i have never seen a flea on him.
Although, if the recipe for frontline hasnt changed for years there is a chance that fleas are mutating to become immune to it.
Big congrats to your Dad. How lovely that he has found love and companionship at that age :-) x

Very true, thats why at my salon we have a strict policy of refusing dogs with fleas,a bit like hairdressers and headlice!(We have a notice in reception stating this). We had a problem a few years ago of certain dogs which were always coming in with fleas so we started to check them when they came in and any sign of fleas or flea dirt and they were turned away till they'd been treated.Of course occasionally we find the odd flea after the bath-not much can be done about that but we no longer get the infested ones. You can guarantee if a dog comes in with fleas they will end up on the other dogs no matter how careful you are (including mine who come to work with me) and its unfair.
I have to say that Frontline doesn't work at all on my dogs, the only drops that have worked have been Advocate-or else I use Capstar tablets in conjunction with a bath in Flea Shampoo.

funny you posted this, I frontlined my two today for the first time this year. I havent seen a flea for years and I have two cats (who catch rabbits !!) but one of my boys keeps scratching and I cant see any fleas but thought I should frontline just in case. When I frontline I also wash all bedding and spray the house and furniture with household flea spray.
Fleas are possibly getting used to frontline because people use it every month as a precaution, I personally dont like chemicals so only frontline every now and then.

It was a wounderful day with much laughter. We were all serious until the registrar said she was to read a poem and my brother asked if it was the one about the boy stood on the burning deck! We all laughed and a couple of my old aunties were crying with laughter. Lovely weather, lovely photo's and then an evening party for about 200 aged from 3 - 84! seeing all my kids and partners and friends.
One old friend said the usual "you havent changed" I was sad to think I was fat and fifty for ever then!! But a joyfull day and woke up 10 am the next day!!

Now I am intrigued about the poem of the boy on a burning deck?

A boy stood on the burning deck
Picking his nose like mad
Rolling them up in little balls
And flicking them at his Dad.
Dad taught us that as kids to annoy Mum Or
A boy stood on the burning deck
His legs were all a quiver
He Gave a cough, his leg fell off
And floated down the river
It was part of a major epic poem something like the Temberlayne and the phrase "A boy stood on the burning deck" was in it, as kids my Dad & his brothers sorted out their own words.

Thanks
"The boy stood on the burning deck" is a very famous poem (called 'Casabianca') about the Battle of the Nile at the time of Nelson. It's one of the poems that lends itself readily to comic alteration - one version goes:
"The boy stood on the burning deck,
His name was Freddie Ollocks.
The captain shouted "Freddie's last!"
And Freddie answerd "You've got to be joking!" ....
I knew it was somthing to do with a burning ship and Nelson as kids they would have to learn poems off by heart. Thanks for that!!
We do have another version but it was really rude!
Yes you were right Ive had to Advantix him again and Im itching!!! Plus do Jake as well and the bedding.

Funny that you posted this - we have been struggeling with fleas a bit. For some reason we have them in the garden, I think it's because we get a lot of foxes in there. I have found a few fleas on my girl, and I panicked. We use Stronghold on our dog, but the problem is that the fleas have to bite her in order for Stronghold to work! So now I check her whenever she comes back from the garden, plus I use the roomspray regularely until the first frost killes the fleas in the garden. It's a nightmare! The vet suggested to maybe switch her to frontline, but now that I read this I'm not so sure I should!!!!

Frontline always seems to work for ours. Having said that we have just come home form a trip to North Wales, in our daughters caravan and the dogs are very itchy. I think its the Hedgehogs there as we have seen them regularly and have to call the dogs away as their facinated. I suppose there could be foxes there too but have never seen one. They are due to be Frontlined again in a few days so Ill just bring it forward.
