Your dog gets a stud book number if it has a win that carries a stud book number with it. These include a CC, RCC, and depending on the breed class wins or high places in Open or Limit. Oh! and Junior Warrent. And IMHO they don't mean anything. Except that your dog has won what ever it needed to win to gain a stud book number.

Well I for one, am
very proud when my dogs gain a stud book number *in the Field* Jackie!
HPR field trial awards are not easy to come by and if my dogs get an award and *recognition* for doing what they are bred to do, then I think I have reason to celebrate :-)

Leight I'm sure it does, I meant the number in it's self meant nothing as it is just a sign that your dog has won whatever is required to win the number, meaning it was the win that counted not the number.

No bitches can have them too!!!!! All 3 of my girls have their stud book nos. My youngest bitch Mia having won a RCC as a pup so she got her's. Miranda has a RCC too and Asti got a 2nd in OB one year before she really threw the towel in for being shown! Pity, she's 12 in May and I still have folk asking what "age" my youngster is?

To get the stud book number, which inlcudes dogs and bitches - a dog/bitch must be placed at a certain level or higher in certian classes at certain shows, therefore showing they are of a high standard. I don;t know if it's the same for all breeds - but for Cockers the placings are at a high level in Champ shows. The number itself is simply a registration number that is allocated to a dog/bitch to prove they are good specimins of the breed and therefore suitable for breeding from. The KC's "Stud Book" is then the record of the dogs registered as having won at the relevant level.
You will see stud book numbers quoted on pedigrees in the same way you'll see Sh Ch, Crufts winner etc - as it is a sign of acheivement.
