Hi all just after some advice, my bitch is due in season any time soon and we will hopefully be mating her. She is due her booster now and I'm wondering if i should wait till after she has her pups??? I have read soo much about the ill effects off annual boosters every year so last year I opted not to give her her annual booster as the previous year she lost a lot of her coat whether it was realated or not I'm not sure but it never happened this year. Help!!

I have had bitches that were due for their booster shortly before a planned mating. Ive never had a problem arising from this sort of situation. If anything I would have thought it would boost the puppies own immunity levels if the mother had only recently been given prior to a mating.
But thats just my opinion. There are probably others with differing opinions or experiences :-)

Had the same situation many years ago and my Vet told me not to vaccinate. He said there would be plenty of time after the pups were born and she had stopped feeding them.

Agree with pugnut. Last year I had a bitch boostered on the second day of her season. She was mated on day 10. Had a normal pregnancy and whelped easily. My vet mentioned that pups would have good immunity.
However, I hadn't let her boosters lapse. I know for certain, if she had missed a year, he would insist on giving the 2 jabs, as you do with a new pup. He won't just do a booster, if it has lapsed by more than 3 months.

I agree with pugnut too. If she's boostered before she comes into season there should be no problems, and the pups will have good maternal immunity.

Lats year I had a bitch due for her booster at the same time as she was due to be mated and I asked my then vet for advice. He looked it up and said it would be fine, so my bitch was mated one day, vaccinated the next, mated again the next day -and she had ten healthy pups.
thanks soo much for your reply guys!!! much appreciated. Will take her down tomorrow to have her booster...thanks again guys Clare
I have let her miss last year withpur having a booster..shoyuld Iave them all redone again than???

Did she have just the lepto last year, or none at all? The manufacturers say that boosting every 3 years for distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus is fine, but leptospirosis needs boosting annually.
However ultimately she's your dog, so if you only want her to have a single dose of each then that's your decision.
I didn't do any last year so I 'm thinking I will have to get them all done again??

Why not get a titre test to check her levels so you know if she has cover?
I have her booked in for this evening for her vacines...I might ask about the titre test. Not sure whether to have them all done again??
Took her to vets last nigt and started a full course again.

There is no justification for a full course (two lots of jabs) in a dog over 12 weeks old, especially one that is already vaccianted, a booster is a booster is a booster no matter how logn t4he interval.
Thsi was written abotu a while back by one of the vet5s in teh dgo papers and seen by the Dog press vet as tatamount to disgraceful conduct as seems to be a common practise.
I attended a talk by a Vaccine manufacturer (Intervet I think) a few years ago run by Sout West Dobe club and they said exactly the same.
http://www.intervet.co.uk/Products_Public/Nobivac_DHPPi/090_Product_Datasheet.asp

"It is recommended that dogs be revaccinated with canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus and canine parvovirus every 3 years and against canine parainfluenzavirus every year. "
Taken from the Nobivac datasheet link.
For Nobivac Lepto the datasheet states
"Booster vaccination: A single annual booster dose is recommended."
I took her last night and they started the vacs again giving me the whole its been more than a year story...they vaccinated her with eurican...I'm not happy about vaccinating every year but I'm not fully confident to not either. Now I'm worried as she is due in season and we will be hopefully breeding her.
The datasheet for Eurican says that boosting is required annually for this product, and the next page says that it can be used in pregnancy. So I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Thanks jeangenie....theres just soo much out there on pros and cons of boosters!! When I came home last nigt I was worried I had done the wrong thing and I rang her breeder who has been in the bred over thirty years and she always boosters and hers have lived well into their teens. Its a hard one!

I don't think you have need to worry either! I bet you go ahead, have her mated, and everything is just fine. :-)
