Hi, I have a 20wk old bc pup. She is fed a complete puppy kibble. Im about to order some more bags of food but am not sure what to order! Iv had contradicting advice from various people about whether to continue to feed her puppy food after 6months? My intentions were to carry on feeding her puppy food until 10-12 months then gradually switch to adult.
The advice i recieved stated that its best to change her food to adult at 6 months and that way she 'grows slowly'
Im really not sure the best way to go now, as shes my first BC(I always feed my gsds puppy/junior food until 12months before switching over)
Any advise greatly recieved!!
Oh, also while im here lol, i was thinking of feeding my dogs a raw egg every once in a while- do i include the shell? break it? whisk it into food? thanks!!

Personally I would start mixing adult with puppy now. Half and Half, at around 9 months I would switch over to adult only.
If I feed eggs it is usually only if they are about to go out of date, then I crack one raw into the food.

Thanks for that, can i ask why you change the food over so much younger than it says on the bag or 'official' advise from the company...is it to slow down growing?
thanks
I have a gundog breed and he didn't move to adult food until he was 12 months - like your GSD's.
In my experience there are few dog subjects that don't generate conflicting advice and feeding seems to be the main one!! I can only suggest trusting your instincts and finding one good breed mentor to follow - perhaps your breeder can help...
Eggs - I give them whole, out in the garden. One will carry it for ages before breaking and eating it complete, the other will drop it on the paving, eat all the white and yolk but only half the shell. I figure either way is ok. If I were to mix it with food, I'd put the whole thing in.

With a Border Collie, it is partly the growth aspect, but also I don't like the high protein content in the puppy food. It can make the puppy over hyper.
I took this advice from an experienced breeder years ago, the breeder of my current dog recommended the same. So it is something I have always done.
I have three BCs and had them all from puppies, my youngest being 18 months.
All were originally fed a complete puppy food and then at around 6 months, depending on when the puppy food ran out I change across to an adult version. All my dogs have matured properly and grown properly with no ill effects so it seems to be an ideal time for them.
I do now feed a raw diet instead and found this to be incredibly beneficial for all three of the dogs.
Mine get a raw egg once a week, shell and all. My youngster doesnt like the shell so I ground it up for her but the rest just have it as it comes. One my boys loves having it whole and takes the time to gently break it, lick out the yolk etc and then crush the shell.
Sardines are also a nice thing to add as well.
Good luck with your pup, BCs are soo much fun.
Out of interest why a BC now when you have had GSDs before?

Well i do agility with my current gsd, and although we have had amazing successes i darent even dream of in her first 18months competing, i know that we will eventually meet our match in the highest levels- im an extremely competitve person...so what better breed to have than a BC!
I have to say, so far its been a learning curve(she is from high drive working lines) but she is doing a very good job at converting me :D.
The rate at which she picks things up is phenominal! I taught her to play dead and now she brings toys, drops them at my feet and goes through everything i have taught her one by one- including playing dead!! until i respond by playing with her!
Sorry a bit off topic lol
thanks everyone for the advise, im definately gonna change her to adult when this bags finished.
you will have great fun with her believe me but those first 18 months go soooo quickly. The only thing we struggle with cos she is also from high drive lines is chase drive but we are getting there with the self control.
completely off topic but what lines is she from?
We statd off with Jake on Beta from his breeder and changed him to Beta adult at about 11 to 12 months he's thrived.
I would not have wished him to grow slowly but to have the correct food for the correct age.
i was really interested in this,as i have a 6months collie pup who is on arden grange puppy food, does anyone else feed this?i think il get adult food nearer the end of the bag, altho i believe their premium is fairly high protein, too.my elderlly collie has been on a.g.lite for years.
sorry,meant prestige not premium!

I have fed prestige instead of puppy food when I have pups as that is what Mum would have been on.
If pup is well grown and well covered I start mixing puppy and adult half and half.
My 13 month old is now on adult, though I am considering putting her back on puppy as she has lost her puppy coat and would like to get her coat back asap, but again the adult is quite rich compared to puppy foods of old that were usually about 24% protein..
thanks for that!jess seems quite wellgrown, and looks lovely(but i could be biased!)i think il look at the protein levels in prestige and puppy|junior,as ive thrown out the bag, typically,.she s not over hyper or anything, what level would i be looking for ,for a six months old border collie?thanks for advice!

Have you tried contacting them direct on the phone, i know and others who have called them say that they are very helpful in finding the right one for you and your pets.
i certainly will,then,thankyou!
I've currently got 4 border collies, 3 were on puppy food until around 10 months, 1 was changed to adult food at around 6 months - she was completely hyper (I mean well over the top for a pup), and I felt the protein levels of the puppy food didn't suit her. It was the right thing to do. Personally, I prefer to keep my dogs on a good quality puppy food until around the 10 month mark, but it doesn't have to be ultra-high protein. I never bother with the 'Junior'.
My youngest bitch was raised on Arden Grange puppy, she then went onto the AG Performance. We are all now using CSJ feeds.
