Hello nutkin.

Am looking for some advice on whether to choose a Weimaraner as a breed for our first puppy.

I have been bought up with labradors but they were all rehomed and so I have never had a puppy before.

I will be at work 9 to five but will be at home for an hour at midday.

I have a secure garden and a dog flap.

What do you think????

I know folk with Weimeraners and they can be one of the breeds that do not take to being away from their owner for any length of time.

The person I am aquainted with kept two other breeds, and only had problems wioth the Weims, who sshe found hated being left even for reasonabley short periods with other Canines for company.

Of course it might just have been these individuals.

You are more likely to have luck with a more independant breed, that is more laid back, and woulod be able to amuse itself during the day as long as you gave it pelenty of time in the morning and evenings.

Hello
Sorry I am a bit late in reply. I have been off line for a few
days.
You can always click on my name and then get my e-mail
address. I lost a lot of e-mails last week, but should hopefully
be back on track again now.
I dont recommend leaving a Weimaraner puppy for more than 2-3 hours
tops a day. Why? Because they miss their owners too much and pine.
It is a known fact that the older Weimaraner will be destructive if left also. I do know people that leave their dogs but have cages. This is the one option available to you. The one problem is we are all so different. Some people leave their Weims longer than 3 hours, but are fantastic with getting up early in the morning and walking the dog (when older I add). They come home and go to training groups one night, walking for miles the next. The dogs are happy and socialised. Then other people cant walk the dogs at all as they are tired out from work, the dog gets bored and destruction sets in. These dogs normally go to the rescue centres, and bad habbits die hard.
A secure garden is quite important as Weimaraners love to dig their way out of jump the 6ft fence if they see a cat.
I think it would be a good idea to e-mail me at home and I will help you understand all you need to know.
Also joining the Weimaraner club forum is an excellent way of learning all their is to know about a Weimaraners good and bad habbits. Plus we all love to chat.

Thanks for the reply.

But after everyones advice I have decided to steer clear of Weimaraners, at least until I have more time to give them.

I have decided on a labrador.

I have already decided I will try flyball or agility as there is a very successful team only a mile from my house.
I'm also in training myself for the early mornings. I have been trying to get up a quarter of an hour earlier each week, and because I'm not getting the puppy (to be called Darcy by the way) until March, hopefully the training will have paid off and I'll be ready for the early morning walks.

I've also managed to wangle my boyfriends mum having her all day twice a week and the other 3 days of the week we'll have a dog walker in. So hopefully she'll be happy with us
