Hi
I took Amber, our Lab. for her 12 week injection at 5.30 today and the vet microchipped her aswell.
About an hour after getting her home her eyes started going red and within 30 mins max. they started puffing up. Not long after, her face had swollen up so much that she started to look like a "Sharpe" - one of those wrinkly dogs! The swelling is hard, not soft.
We spoke to the vet when her eyes started going red and they said its probably a reaction to the vaccination. We then phoned them again when her face started swelling up. I've not long been back from the vets as I had to take her down there, he gave her another injection and is keeping her in overnight for observation.
Has anyone experienced this before? We are REALLY REALLY worried that we won't get her back. We lost Sheba, our GSD X in June overnight in the vets (she had internal bleeding) and don't want a repeat of it.
Help!

I am so sorry to here about your other dog, but i was very shocked the vet microchiped the pup at such an early age of 12 weeks, I was told that a pup could not be chipped until 6 months of age because the chip can more around with the growth of the pup and could end up any where. I hope your pup pulls through, it is in the best place and the vet will take good care of her. good luck debbie

Hi Debbie
Thanks for your message. He didn't mention that she should be microchipped at an older age, he just agreed to do it. I did ask him whether it was the microchip that she may have got the reaction to, but he said that he doubted it and that it's probably the vaccination.
I'm sitting here worried sick and keep wondering if I should phone them to see how she is. I took her down there at 8.15. :(

can't offer any advice Lisa but just want you to know that we have our fingers crossed here for Amber.
I've had my oldest dog react twice to something (not injections) and swell up with puffy eyes etc and he was fine both times after treatment

Thanks for the reassurance. I think I'm going to ring them in a minute. They told me to ring at 10 in the morning, don't think I can wait that long.

Hi Lousalo, sorry to hear about your pup:( with the microchip, a lot of vets microchip pups at an early age, some breeders get their litters chipped before they go to their new homes, I don't think the microchip will have done any harm:) I personally get my dogs tattoo'd rather than chipped, but that's just my preference. I have heard of dogs having a reaction to vaccines before, and you poor pup is in the right place to be cared for, Give the vet a ring for an update - I am a real worrier when it comes to my dogs so I would not hesitate to ring, don't think you are doing any thing wrong - you are worried so just ring:).
I know it's the last thing on your mind at the moment, but you should get your vet to report the reaction to the pharmaceutical company as they are supposed to report any adverse reactions.
Thinking of you and your pup - best wishes Julie:)

Hi Julie
Just tried ringing the vets, they've got their emergency message on their phone. Suppose I'll have to wait until the morning. Can't imagine we'll be having much sleep tonight!

Oh lisa, you poor thing, sleepless night for you then :( If you get too worried ring the emergency number and speak to the vet on call, that must be who is looking after Amber ??? No wonder my vet groans at me!!!!! Julie:)
Sorry to hear about your pup, but I am sure she will be OK.
One of my pups had a reaction to 2nd vaccine, a few years ago, she reacted differently to yours (it was a reaction to the viral hepatitis vaccine) and her eye turned blue. We had to take her to the Animal Health Trust, where Keith Barnett, diagnosed vaccine reaction.
Within a week everything had resolved itself, and she has been fine ever since.
As regards the microchipping, it is totally in order to have any pup chipped from 8 weeks of age, this is on recommendation from the chip manufacturers.
Fingerscrossed for your baby

Hi Jayne
Many thanks for your message. Although you cannot guarantee anything, it's nice to know (well, not nice, but you know what I mean) that we're not the only people who are having, or have had to go through this (even though yours reacted differently). I just hope she's OK. We would be devestated if she doesn't pull through. Amber replaced Sheba. I don't want to replace Amber for a long long time.
Going to bed now but not sure if I will get any sleep. Just hope we have some good news to tell the boys in the morning (they don't even know she's down at the vets).:(
Thanks also to everyone for your help, advice and kind words.
Lisa

I sure hope ur puppy is o.k.

As Julie/muddydogs said about the microchip- my bitch was microchipped at 7 weeks and 5 days old- by the breeder before she came home with me:) I sincerly hope your pup is fine- no point saying try not to worry because you obviously will after losing Sheba suddenly:) They probably just want to keep an eye on the pup to check that the swelling etc goes down okay:) Hopefully things will look better in the morning when you phone:)

HI, I do hope your girl is better this morning, you must be so worried. In a day or two when things have calmed down a bit and she is hopefully on the road to recovery, please consider asking the vet to report the batch no of the vaccine to the company that supplied it. I wonder if because reactions are sometimes not reported to the makers, that the batch continues to be used, with maybe dire consequences for other dogs. Also the figures on "reactors" may become incorrect if its not reported. Of course at the moment you are just concerned with your own dog and I hope she improves quickly.

Hi Westie Lover
Many thanks for your message. I've put another post up this morning confirming that she's OK. Can't wait to get her home now :)
Lisa
Hi L/Salo, sorry to hear of the reaction your dogs having & hope she recovers soon.
Can I add its` very important that your vet reports this reaction to the vaccine & if he won`t/can`t then you can do it quite easily yourself, to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate as well as the company who made the vaccine. Here is the link to download the form.
http://www.vmd.gov.uk/http://www.vmd.gov.uk/sarss/forms/mla252aa.pdfWell the first link tells you all about it & the second link is the form itself, if you need any help give me a shout.

Hi Christine
Many thanks for your message. I've added another post this morning to confirm that she's OK. I/we are soooo relieved. The nurse said that they will report back to the vaccination company, I just hope that when we have her booster done next year that we don't go through the same thing again!

I've got some photo's of what she looked like last night if anyone's interested in seeing them. It might also help others if it happens to their dog (hopefully it won't!).
Lisa
Hi Lisa - glad to hear your pup is on the mend. Although hopefully this was just a one-off reaction I think I would be very wary about having the booster next year. It may be that your pup's immune system just couldn't cope with the vaccine.
At least you've got time on your side, though, if you want to do some research before you decide.
Regards
Joyce

Hi Stacey
Have just resent you the poorly photos of her. My little boy is 4 yrs old, that's Luke. We also have Adam who's 9. Totally different in looks, Luke is blonde and Adam is brown, but both have a olivey type of skin (if you see them next to another child, they're a bit darker), they get that from my husband - he's Spanish, but doesn't look it, he looks English! LOL

Lisa have you advised her breeder of this reaction?
I ask as I was chatting about a similar reaction in her German Spitz with a friend of mine a little while back, it was found that several dogs of the same line had the same reaction to the Lepto part of the vaccination.

Hiya
My brother spoke to the breeder yesterday (he works with him) and he was really surprised. He hasn't heard from any of the other owners confirming that theirs had the same reaction, but now that he knows what's happened to Amber he may even check on the others to make sure they're ok.

Hi Lisa, How's amber today? Are they going to do any test to make sure there is no long term damage caused? I hope she's better - those pics looked terrible! Julie:)

Hi Julie
Amber's very well today. Back to normal. Thankfully :)
Unfortunately we didn't speak to the vet yesterday and were just so glad to get her back that we didn't really ask any questions.
The paperwork they gave us said that no further investigation (or something like that) was needed, so I guess they done/checked all they can.
Thks

brilliant news Lisa :D I'm not too up on auto immune dogs, I think you are supposed to be cautious regarding different medications from now on, depending on what she had the reaction to - I know of a couple of border collies that are auto immune and are not vaccinated or frontlined, they are treated homeopathically. You can get on with enjoying your new pup now Julie:)

Oh Lisa the poor thing- no wonder you were in such a state- the photos were horrific:o Hope she's looking like her normal self now- including the eyes which did look particulary nasty:)
