Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Cost of second entries and stakes class entries
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.09.09 09:19 UTC
I would love to know what others think.

I am horrified at the cost of second entries at some shows.  At WKC it was £5!, needless to say I only entered an extra breed class (not enough numbers in lower age classes for JW points), but didn't enter stakes which I love to compete in.

I cannot see the justification, especially in breed classes, as once you have paid your initial class the society do not have any extra cost involved with you entering another breed class.  They still have to print same number of cards regardless of entries in the class.

As for stakes class where is the fairness of charging a non CC breed the Non CC price when entering only stakes, but charging a breed with CC's on the day the CC price, after all an exhibit not entered in the breed isn't eligible for the CC?  Some society's play fair and charge the non cc price.

Re stakes classes generally with the high cost of them as second entries and the chance that you will Miss the class because of clashing or having to withdraw to stay unbeaten for Group or Puppy Group (I personally believe the beaten dog rule should not apply to stakes anyway), ti is a lot of money to throw away.

Is it just me or are the numbers way down in the stakes classes.  theya re usually judged on all days by the same judge so I expect it costs the society in board and lodging for soemtimes a paltry number of dogs actually entered let alone turning up.

I was quite happy to pay £1 - £2, grudgingly willing to pay £3 if I liked/respected the stakes judge, but no way will I pay £5, and only paid that for second entry in breed because I want a chance at the JW points.  As it is I won junior with two exhibits present, as other absent, and came 2nd in PG where I could have got points had I won, ce la vie.

I think the prices overall Barbara are getting silly now and I think I am in a reasonably comfortable financial situation but I wonder how people will be able to continue at this rate.  There is always a crossing point for most and they extra few pounds is all it takes.

One of the recently entries were £26 were they not.

I had entered Birmingham 2 dogs, catalogue etc , £60 Travelodge that I couldnt get a deal on and now can't go , waste really..

Blue - not exactly on topic but can you sell on your Travelodge room?

Presumably it doesn't matter to the hotel who is in the room as long as it has been paid and if you have also included a dog or two then it could be used by someone showing.   You could advertise the details on here or on eBay perhaps?

Could be worth a try to get some of your money back...

I would have thought that the main costs for people were the travel, but the entry fees must have a bearing as this year our non C entries have held up pretty well, in fact some very good entries, but the CC shows are well down.

Certainly I know people are entering one or two dogs where they previously would have entered three.

I always entered two if I could, but this year with entering extra classes with the puppy I have just entered the one quite often.

I think the travelling certainly for those far down and far north is the worst, I average about £70 per show for fuel average £200 cost per show.

Blue if you log into your travelodge account for £5 you can change the date maybe to one you will need later in the year.
I booked Paignton travel lodge then forgot to enter the show,I offered the lodge to a friend who logged in and then
informed me I could change the date for the sake of £5,Ive done it to the end of the year then hopefully can change again
in the new year for the Paignton show (it has to be the same travelogde),otherwise offer it for sale on here
someone may take it.

Ooh, do travellodge allow dogs?
- By Star [gb] Date 04.09.09 16:48 UTC
They do but are now charging £20 per dog which is more expensive than a room in their sale.

I must admit, I don't bother with the stakes much any more. Its to much money on top of the classes and the catalogues.  I find the catalogues are a bit pricey, and its often a toss up between a catalogue or the stakes
- By Brainless [gb] Date 05.09.09 22:05 UTC
Oh I don't bother with a catalogue (except Club shows to update on the breeding) as you can find the results on-line, and I can never find anyone to mark up the catalogue.

Can't see well enough to take results of the slips or see peoples numbers when I am not in the ring.
- By vinya Date 05.09.09 22:49 UTC
i only get it to find out what ring am in and who's on first and what number i am. still panic that i will miss my class lol
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.09.09 07:02 UTC
But you get that with yur passes, ring number is on the left and order of judging is either in the schedule, or notified with the passes.

we have a caturloge beween three of us, all got diffentant breeds so not much money each.
have brought pages from others in the past and paid a pound for them, people seem happy with that.
- By dorastar [gb] Date 06.09.09 14:08 UTC
I only buy a catalogue when I've entered a new puppy, just so that I can see their name in it.

I though it was going to be a good idea when societies said they were going to print catalogues per group rather than the whole day but they are still charging enough for these usually only a £1 cheaper than the whole thing.  So still cant see the point.

Someone needs to buy one so that other people can ask them what their bench number is - lol!  Not everyone is as well prepared as you, B.!

I usually buy the open show ones (more of a need for a catalogue at open shows), and my parents buy the championship show ones.  Mum likes filling in the catalogue at ringside.  I've sold my pages several times to people in other breeds - I think it's a good idea.  We've got catalogues going back to the 70s - sometimes it's nice to have a look through them.

I keep entering stakes and then forgetting I have - bit of a waste of money really.

> Someone needs to buy one so that other people can ask them what their bench number is

I'd never thought of using a catalogue to know my bench number, as that is what I use the pass for, have only ever used one to check how many in my class, and to see if there are entries in the lower ones for timing getting dogs ringside.

But then with my eyesight (or lack of) it is harder to use the catalogue with lots of things on a page than a pass with just my details on ;)
