I vaguely remember reading about someone had their vet prescribe meds to delay their bitch's season. One of my girls is now over 3 weeks late, and in 4 weeks time we are taking the dogs on holiday. When i booked the holiday i had hoped she would be finished her season several weeks beforehand. I am just thinking/planning ahead at the moment but has anyone used anything to delay the season? If so, were there any side effects? I am desperately hoping that she comes in within the next few days, as i don't really want to give her unnecassary meds.
Thank you in advance.

I have had bitches injected to delay seasons with no ill effects and they have gone on to have normal litters after without problem.
Not something I do regularly but on occasion it has been fine.

Do you remember how many days or weeks before her season was due that the injection was administered? Also, how long did it delay her season for?

I did it for "an important show" -never again will I think a show matters more than health. :( My girl never had another normal season after this. She had one that lasted one day, one that was 100% silent, and several never appeared at all. She used to be so regular. Eventually we had her spayed.

Bring her to my house, expected my girl to be in a month ago and she's still holding on, even though she's acted as though she was due to come in for nearly 2 months now!

I know what you mean! Mine has been a bit grumpy and temperamental just recently but it still hasn't happened!! My other girl had her season over 6 weeks ago and i was hoping this would start her early but no such luck. It's just typical that the moment you make plans, it all falls to pieces. lol.

I wouldn't risk using something which could cause future problems for my girls.
But, if you want a bitch to start her season, a "date" with a dog might do the trick.
I've had several bitches start their seasons within a few days of being "courted" by a young, virile male.
Seems to get the hormones moving ;-)

Lol, actually looks like my girl may be coming in, little speck of blood last night and this morning.

hi, can anyone tell me more about this drug to delay seasons?
my young weimaraner bitch I want to have spayed in about 6 months. shes 13 months old and I don't wish to breed her. snag is she is on her second season only 12 weeks after the first one finished and I'm getting concerned she might carry on doing these very close ones which I can't see doing her any good-and makes it hard finding a good gap in between when the vet can opperate as I've been told its a real bad idea to opperate close to a season. wondered if the delay drug might prove suitable for a situation like hers?
wondered if the delay drug might prove suitable for a situation like hers? In my girl's case it made it worse, because the injection made it impossible to tell where in her cycle she was so we had to spay her without knowing if it was halfway between seasons or not. Speak to your vet and see what they say as your bitch's situation is a bit unusual.
I would advise against giving her any drugs until she's been properly checked out as 12 weeks between seasons sounds very unusual and perhaps indicates that something may be wrong?

If you read RRFriends post on this thread it may help you. I don't have any suggestions sorry.

Just a quick question on the injection- When is in meant to be done? Before the season or on the first day of the season?

On the odd occasion I have used it I had it done about a month prior to the bitch being due in season. That would delay it by 6 months ussually but there is a huge variation in how different bitches respond of course. My friend has just mated a bitch Not my breed) who had the jab last time she was due, came in spot on time for her next season, was mated and is carrying a nice sized litter.
