I have just rescued a maltese x dog about one year old, he was in a sorry state, matted coat but such a friendly little chap.  I have a Jack Russell x patterdale spayed bitch and they seem ok.

My dog, Pippa, has always eated dry dog food, two feeds daily, she weighs around 7kg. Can I give the same food to the maltese, Harry? How often and quanity etc.

We pick him up Wednesday, after he gets 'done', dont know whether he's house trained but I have a crate for him.  I've read up alot on Maltese x shitzu but any hands on information about these breeds would be really helpful.

I found this site really valuable when I got Pippa, she was a rescue too, had issue with her skin but the advise given on here solved the problem without the need for vets...she's now four and a half!!!

Thanks

Hi Noel2538

I don't know about Harry from a breed perspective but I'd suggest that two meals will probably be sensible and it suits a lot of dogs  The amount you feed will depend on his size, his condition, and activity levels.  It will be a good idea to get him weighed when you collect him and the rescue home should be able to advise what they've been feeding him.  You may want to keep him on the same food as the rescue home for a while to minimise disruption.

Good luck with Harry

hi

thanks for replying, Harry is settling in fine with Pippa.  They both have California Natural dry, Herring and Sweet Potatoe.  I give them two feed a day, they both are gaining weight, we just emigrated and Pippa had lost weight being in quaratine..bless her.  Harry loves the food and it agrees with him too!

Im now training him,  he had no manners but he's getting there, takes alot a grooming, totally opposite to Pippa.  Pippa's black and smooth coat while Harry's is white and curly...just glad that they get on, only been three weeks now.

as usual this site is so helpful...thanks :)

Hey noel2538!
you've just emigrated too?  So have I!!!  Whereabouts are you?
I see you're feeding California Natural also, just to add to this thread, I think that food is pretty good!  Just in the process of changing my two over to it now.
Glad to hear that Pippa and Harry are starting to bond!

Hi

Both Pippa and Harry like their food and its not upset them either:)

Ive emigrating to Australia, Im in Melbourne....my husband and my daughter came, we've been here just over three months....different and I miss family and friends in the UK...Where are you then?

Harry was doing ok but he does have issues....barking when we leave him...so not getting much sleep at the moment...put question on here, so I hope I get some advice?

Hope your dogs loving the food and that your settling in well too:)

Hi Debbie

I've sent you a pm.
Sounds like you have your hands full with Harry!  From reading this again and your other thread, he sounds like he has a couple of issues.  Firstly the barking at night of course and secondly it sounds a bit like separation anxiety too, sort of rolled into the one behaviour.
I'm not quite sure how I'd deal with it.
When we first got Alf, he was a real whingy whiner at night and also in the morning if he heard a pin drop, but after ignoring him and having to tell him a couple of times to can it, he got the message and was fine.  Too easy really.  Whereas your situation sounds a bit more 'ingrained'.
I'm sure one of our more experienced members will come along with some practical advice for you and Harry.  I'd just be tempted to ignore him, but understand that's difficult.
