hi guys

My best friend thinks her husband is having an affair, however he keeps on deleting the history on the home computer after he has used it.  Is there anyway you can get the sites visited after someone has deleted them off the list?

I am not much help there but im sure the will be someone along soon who can help , i am a bit cynical about these things as it happened to me  but before computers  but mobile phone records do just aswell

I think you can but you need to find yourself a geek, the police when they investigate always take away computers to study the hard drive.

I feel for your friend, if she's not the paranoid type then she's getting that gut feeling for a reason.  My first husband was like this, the history used to get wiped every day.  One day he forgot and I was dismayed at the type of p**n he was looking at.  I had my gut feelings about him too which proved to be correct. 

I'm not a prude, but when it's secretive and the type is just nasty and sad then even if there is no affair it is very damaging to the relationship.

does he delete it or is it set to delete each day? sometimes these things can be selected to delete each time and may have been for some time, she might only have noticed because she's checking up on him.

what about if she looks at 'cookies' or the search colomn? If he is hiding something then i'm sure he'll clear everything to cover tracks. Horrible position for your friend.

get her to try the temporary files - on the internet browser along the top there is file edit view etc, go along to 'tools' and click 'internet options'. on the first tab which is 'general' it has a bit about browsing history and temporary files. Click settings then 'view files' which is 3 quarter way down the page in a row of 3. This then brings up all the temporary files that have been looked at. It maybe that these have aslo been deleted but worth a look.

If files are deleted you can still get them back which is why police take the drives away, you can get software that will allow you to recover deleted files if you really want to.

geek bit - when you delete a file with Windows it doesn't actually remove the file it deletes a pointer that the operating system uses to find the file.  So it is possible to recreate that pointer and recover the file, which is what the police do when they take away computers.

Why doesn't she keep 'interupting' him while he is on the computer, and if he keeps 'exiting' out every time she enters the room, then surely she has the ideal excuse to ask him what he's been looking at!!  Surely talking about it would be better. 

If it's just sites visited then I'd imagine he'd have them saved as his favourites. It might not help with the content as such, but at least she'll know which sites he uses.

I think although I'm not 100% (so forgive me if not correct!) it has something to do with the cookies, you have to go into temporary internet files, I am not to sure if it would show all content or just sites visited.
