I have very long red/auburn/ginger, whatever you want to call it, hair, its around down to my bum and its straight, never have to do anything with it as its naturally straight.

Been thinking for my holiday i want a change of hair style,i want it layered.. but i do not want to lose too much of the length as i like it and it would upset a lot of people! lol!

So has anyone had this done before, does it look good on long haired straight headed people? Any advise would be greatly appriciated.

think it depends on how straight your hair is and whether it's thick or fine. if it's pretty thick then putting some layers in it would look great but if your hair is too fine then may make it look even more fine. i think you will need to loose a little length to achieve the best results.

my hair is quite thick, its not thin i wouldnt say and its really straight, my sisters are so jealous cos i dont need to use straighners lol! but thats only because its so heavy and it pulls it down (i think! lol)

how much length would need to be removed would you think?

I'm not a hairdresser but i thought just having layers put in doesn't mean shortening the main length just the bits that are layered.

If your hair is thick layering it will make it quicker to dry, so this is good for holiday!

It will depend on which hairdresser you go to - they are all different IME.

I personally love layers, they add movement to the hair, volume, I couldn't be without them!  I hate hair that just hangs and does nothing.  If you are going on holiday to a hot climate you will want to be able to put your hair up so your back can tan, so a few layers, maybe from your shoulders down, would look really nice and still not be too short to be put away in a clip/bun/braid.

Ohh thats really helpful thank you

I think i am definatly going to get it done, just wanted to know if i could keep the length, your right about hair just being there with no volume, my hair just sits on my head, flat and looks better if it throw it forward and ruffle it up so its a bit messy, as its just flat lol!

So hope this adds some nice volume and bounce to it!

Thank you! x

It will be very difficult to layer hair that is as long as yours yorkie, but you could ask your hairdresser about thinning it out to take away some of the weight from it

You've got gorgeous hair which really suits you don't change it to much :)  You could just put it up in different styles maybe?

ha ha i knew someone who has met me would say that about my hair, thank you :-D
i dont want to change the colour or the length really, just want to tidy it up a bit and give it some life i think, as its just flat on my head isnt it and straight and it doesnt have much movement does it... thats why i was thinking about layers, but its apparently quite hard :(

only styles i can do (and this is when i can be bothered! lol) are plated pigtails, hair up high in a bobble, curling is too difficult, takes too long and sometimes goes wrong and half up half down, thats about it, i have had it in a bun recently for a wedding, but i didnt do it - rather hard and loads of clips are needed LOL

I trained as a hairdresser and worked in a great salon.
Some advice would be try to look in magazines before you go to your hairdressers, you can find some good ones in supermarkets or whsmith, one of my favorites is hair-flair, but you can also look online, try to take some pictures along, it helps get a bit of an idea of what you want, you can always ask for a consultation before getting it cut, this ensures your both happy and no exactly what you want.
Do stipulate you don't want to lose a lot of length, as some hairdressers can get a bit scissor happy!

Have you tried plating small plaits root to tip when wet , sleep on it overnite  . take out and brush  should leave it in soft waves !

I used to do this with my daughter's long hair - at one point she could sit on it

Depending on the thickness of the hair you can put in between 10 and 20 plaits - it's very easy and quick to do when the hair is very damp - and in the morning it's dry and wavy/rippled - depending on how many plaits you used :)

I used to put in about 30 for special occasions - it looked spectacular, very Alice in wonderland :-D

the effect is much nicer IMO than crimping irons ;)

depending on your age ..I would say make the most of your lovely long locks, as we age there comes a time when long hair just doesnt look right thats the time to think about getting it cut!

Once you have had layers put in theres no going back .

I had lovely long hair when I was touching twenty (30 yrs ago) I decided I wanted it layering ( gosh brings back memories LOL) made an appointment with Andrew Collinge  all excited about my new hair style and they wouldnt cut it!!! came out with a trim he.. he.. he

A good hairdresser will give  you good advice ..dont dive in you might regret it!!

i tried looking for pictures, but no bodys hair online is as long as mine thats layered.. so finding it hard to get accurate pictures... i dont have a fringe either

Lucky thing - you can get away with just a few plaits then, and start further away from the scalp :)  Then you'll just get ripples ;)
