Has anyone used any websites for selling old gold?
I've looked at a couple, but would rather go by recommendation. One of the sites I've looked at gives you an estimation of what they'll pay you, but the others don't.
We use Kemps the jewellers, locally, just take it in, they weigh it then tell you how much it's worth, you can either take it or leave it. I have loads of gold, so when chains, bracelets get broken or if I lose stones from rings I just take them in. It's surprising just how much this 'scrap' gold is worth.
I'm hoping to be surprised! I've got some old earrings, tangled chains, old chains that are really dirty and things that are just lying in a box never getting worn, so, given that times are hard at the moment, I thought I'd see what I could get for it.
I second using a reputable jeweller, not the folk on the TV or internet offering cash for gold. I am sure they will not be as competitive as a reputable jeweller. My mother had a necklace specially made and designed in a smaller jeweller, so they are proper craftsmen and will give you a better deal.
They are paying teh scrap value, so the quality of the piece (asides from its actual gold content) is irrelevant - the scrap value of gold has gone right up recently.
Find out what the scrap value is.. if these places are paying the same it might be worth it, but your piece might have more value as a a piece of jewellery than as scrap gold... which these places wont tell you.
