Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How to put on some weight/bulk *Slowly*??
- By OwnedbyaBC [je] Date 15.08.09 18:47 UTC
My dog is a 2yr old BC. He is fit and active - you could even say he is often too busy to sit down and eat ;)

He has a diet of JWB, some royal canin dental biscuits, with 1-2 weekly sardines in oil or tomato sauce, 2-3 scrambled egg added, with occasional tins - butchers, nature diet, winalot. He is on Fit N Fertile, and Yumega.

He could do with adding around 2kg to get to a showable weight. How can I do this slowly and healthily?

for me it was as easily as going on a cheaper dog food, eukanuba to WAGG.
she is still perfectally fine but i have to stuggle to keep teh weight off her now.
i would rather her carring alittle too much than being all most too thin.

will your dog eat as much as you can give him, when one of my dogs weight is too low i just add more food and with in a few days she's back up to a good weight. or add in healthy snacks in between meals.

I use raw breast of lamb on mine when they need a bit more weight on them.
I know someone in a different breed to mine - gundog who is very very active and who is fed a small amount of raw breast of lamb daily which keeps her weight up. Maybe worth thinking about.

Sadly he is one of those annoying dogs who only ever eats his fill!

I will try some lamb breast I think. I want him to bulk up slowly, so am avoiding suggestions for mac and cheese and goats milk I've had on a different forum

my boxer is just the same in the way that he will only eat so much however much you give him. the only way i get him to eat abit more and put on weight is to make gravy, homemade or the stuff you get from the shops and add water to. i know it's not really very good for him but at 9yrs old if it makes him eat then thats better than not as far as i'm concerned. he loves it and it makes him eat alot more of his meal, although i only do this for one of his two meals a day.

Gravy is soooo high in salt.

You'd be better off if he will eat it adding cottage cheese or natural live yoghurt to his meals.
Or even a mix of drained or washed (depending what it's in) tinned tuna/sardines/pilchards.

My Boxers love the above as treat and their bowls are always licked clean :)

i know it's not the best thing for him but as he's got older if i give him anything different he just ends up not eating for the next day and throwing up. his stomache just doesn't cope with change and he will not even try to eat 99% of anything diffferent.
i have tried pretty much everything but he's happy with his usual food and little else and even if i temp him i pay the price of clearing up sick the next day.
i give him very little gravy but it just makes the difference of him keeping the weight on and staying in condition.
he's not like my other dogs who will eat anything you offer and even dropping healthy treats ie chicken etc on the floor he will sniff it and then usually walk away. it's as if he knows he will suffer the next day.
