We had a Stud Dog lined up for our bitch but he is the other side of the country - we are in Suffolk, how do we go about finding another stud dog?

If he's the dog whose genotype and phenotype suits your bitch best, then he's the one to use, no matter where he is.

Agreed, it looks like I may have to travel to Northern Europe for my bitch.  A three/ four hour drive is nothing!

Has he suddenly moved house?

If hes the dog that suits your bitch best.. then he is.

If the right dog isnt worth a few hours drive then I would suggest that breeding is probably not the thing you should be doing (and if you dont drive theres ways around that too).

IF you like a particular dog mileage doesn't enter the aquation IMHO

Hi bonnie boo,

As others have said if the dog is the right one for your bitch then distance should not come into it.

However as you would like to know how to find a stud dog there are a number of ways. You visit a dog show where breeders will be with other dogs of the breed you have. You could contact the breed club or clubs to ask for help. To find the right breed clubs you should contact the Kennel Club who have the contact details for all the breed clubs. The best way is to speak to the breeder of your bitch, after all he/she should know their breeding lines the best and should be able to advise you on a suitable stud dog to use.

Do make sure you know what health tests you should have done before breeding from your bitch, you can ask the KC about this they also have a dedicated web site. Your bitches breeder should be able to tell you what health tests need to be one as would the breed club/s and hopefully your vet. Most breeds need hip scoring and eye testing to be completed before being bred from.

And Finally having found the dog you want to use (regardless of distance), do make you you know what his health testing results are before the mating.
