The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club

Code of Good Practice

Note: - "DOG" refers to dog or bitch.  Papillon/Phalene.

1.  Members should consider the welfare of their dogs, and the breed above any personal gain or profit.

2.  Members should only breed from Papillons/Phalenes which are temperamentally and physically healthy.

3.  (a)   No bitch should be mated at more than two consecutive seasons and never without consideration for the bitch.
(b)   No bitch should be mated before her second season or 12 months of age, nor be allowed to  whelp after her eighth  birthday.

4.  (a)   Members should ensure that any stock from which they breed should be Kennel Club Registered and that each buyer is provided with a signed pedigree at the time of purchase.
(b)   Explain any endorsements that might pertain, and obtain written and signed conformation from  the new owner at, or before the dog is physically transferred, that the new owner is aware of the endorsement(s).
(c)   Members should draw up a contract of sale, and provide a puppy pack, for each puppy sold or  transferred to a new owner.

5.  Members should undertake to deal in a fair and honest manner with buyers who shall be encouraged to present the dog before a Veterinary Surgeon within 7 days after the purchase. Should a Veterinary Surgeon, at such examination advise that the dog is NOT in good health, members will verify this opinion, and if necessary take it back and refund the purchase price or agree to a mutual compromise.

6.  Members should be encouraged to take responsibility for any dog bred or supplied by them which may need re-homing.

7.  (a)   No Papillon/Phalene should be sold to any person who regularly buys dogs as an agent for sale or profit, or to any laboratory for experimental work.
(b)   Nor should any Papillon/Phalene be sold or offered as a prize in a raffle or competition.

8.  It is recommended that puppies should not leave the breeder before ten weeks.

9.     Members should encourage new owners to take their puppy to socialization classes.

10.  Members of the Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and sporting manner towards, judges, stewards, and fellow exhibitors, both inside and outside the show ring. The welfare of the dog must be considered at all times above personal feelings.
