What are people's thoughts on this and what would you do....

Someone in one of my breeds keeps turning up at Champ shows to show their dogs and they are not in the catalogue, when questioned they say they sent their entry off but they don't elaborate.  They go in the ring with another number but these are not the same as everyone else is given.

If it happened once then fair enough but 3 or 4 champ shows in a row???

It just seems unfair that the rest of us can get entries in on time or if you miss the closing date hard luck but these people seem to think they are better than that.

They have also been known to send open show entries in on a different form so they try to pay less than everyone else...I know one committee wouldn't let them get away with it but i'm sure many others have.

Do you know this for sure?
Did you speak to the show chairperson or committee person at the time?

If you read the Kennel Gazette you will see each month dogs being disqualified from shows after the event as the owners have not been able to produce satisfactory proof of posting. I.e. the owner must prove to the KC their entry WAS posted but didn't arrive. If they have no such proof, the dog will be disqualified by the KC after the event and any awards removed.

Oh we've got one of them :-)

Seldom in the catalogue, big name, frightful bad luck with the postal service ;-)

I got so exasperated about this in a breed I once had, that I wrote to both the dog papers and the KC about it. (Named breed in the dog papers, named people to the KC)

It did stop after that :-)

Following the letters it was rumoured that the Breed Club wanted to expel me for bringing the breed into disrepute, bring it on said I I'd love to talk about it openly at a SGM etc, strangely they dropped that idea (some of people concerened were on Committee and others friends of some committee members)

In my letter to the KC I asked why Champ Show secretary's didn't collect empty envelopes to compare against alleged losses in post, especially with repeat offenders.

A number of people approached me after going to press as it does happen in other breeds.

Interestingly with on line etries it should occur less now.

I apologise to anyone who has legitimately had an entry go missing, I am solely talking about repeat offenders, in the breed concerned I think it had happened at something like 7 shows!!! And is just downright cheating imo

So my suggest, make a fuss lol

Ahh so it happens in plenty of other breeds aswell then...although not sure if any of you may have and show the same breed as I do.

Yes definitely know this is happening for sure, I noticed it a few weeks ago and there were lots of whispers around the outside of the ring at why and how this person was showing their dogs when they aren't in the catalogue.  Then a few more people piped up this person has done the same thing for the last 3 or more champ shows....I went along to Bournemouth on Monday and yet again they were there but no entry.

I was just trying to find out who to write to so that it can be noted and looked into.

I know other people who have tried to genuinely pay for a late entry but were told no they couldn't do that so it makes me mad when this person gets away with it.

Yes, we have 2 lots of people in my breed who do this regularly, have proof of postings but frequently have entries go astray in post.  IT is now a bit of a standing joke, and treated with surprise if they actually apper in catalogue!  Although this did happen to me about 3 years ago, 3 lots of entries (1 CH and 2 open shows) went adrift, luckily I had proof of posting (all posted at same time so on one form, which caused a bit of a problem) and all paid with by cheques drawn from my Buildling Society so ended up having to pay twice as originals never turned up but money came straight out of account when cheques printed!

Makes you also wonder if they are so strapped for cash what they feed their dogs on doesn't it?

I know someone who used to do this in a breed I used to show and fed her dogs on anything she could get that was cheap or free.

I imagine its only a matter of time before the dogs suffering becomes visible to the experienced eye, but makes one question the reasons WHY people show too.  We all know it can be addictive but personally I'd always hope I put the welfare of my dogs much higher on my priority list than a rosette.

I feel sorry for the dogs.

when all you need is a proof of posting form from any post office this sort of thing will continue to happen.
It only seems to happen in my breed when the entrys are low,( I wonder why ).
- By pavlova [gb] Date 12.08.09 15:22 UTC
Is it because they are strapped for cash or could they be waiting for the last minute in order to see how many other dogs are entered I wonder.

top breeder in my breed made a habit of doing it a couple of years ago!
- By newf3 [gb] Date 12.08.09 15:57 UTC
no cause entrys always come out AFTER the closeing date.
- By gwen [gb] Date 12.08.09 16:49 UTC
With the ones in my breed one lot are in the strapped for cash camp, I think, but with the others I think it is just parsimony (or cheating?) not sure if they can go or not (possibly pups coming up, work commitments or whatever) so they just post an empty envelope!  Then, when time comes, they only have to pay for an entry if they are actually going to attend.
- By pavlova [gb] Date 13.08.09 14:18 UTC
Yes Gwen thats what I was getting at, maybe when they see the entries published and they are low enough they maybe think they are in with a chance and just turn up on the day anyone can get a proof of posting certificate.
- By KateM Date 13.08.09 14:25 UTC
Or wait to see which dog is in coat and therefore take that one along

(we have them in our breed too)

frightful bad luck with the postal service ;-) LOL classic :-)
- By gwen [gb] Date 13.08.09 15:19 UTC
I do know of one very well known former exhibitor (now a judge and a columnist) who boasted of having a  fake post office stamp made up so could do his own  proof of postings, as needed!  Was never sure if it was true or he made it up, but have an inkling may have been true!! :)  Not my breed or group so never checked up in catalogues to see if he frequently was not listed.

> do his own  proof of postings, as needed

That's my best guess too.

With such high profile handlers and dogs involved it does show an amazing brass neck!!
