Topic Dog Boards / Health / coat loss after castration
- By Uisneach [gb] Date 11.08.09 14:17 UTC
My GSD  had retained testicle and was castrated 14 months ago.   His coat has not been good since.  Quite brittle, breaks easily and tail looks like pipe cleaner!   is this normal?  Any ideas to improve it

Well after a "Blonde moment" on my part I bought a huge bottle of Royal Jelly food suppliment from Groomers in error (Thought it was shampoo!!) So waste not want not I started giving it to my girlies about 6 weeks ago and they have never had such thick glossy coats!!
They do have a totally raw diet now as well so it could be a bit of both.
Might be worth a try though. I have to say I have in the past had a GSD with terrible hips castrated at a young age (8  months) and he had a lovley thick healthy coat so if I were you I would have some bloods done at the vet first to check out on any underlying problems, hyperthyroidism comes to mind!

Think you mean Hypothyroidism Aileen- hyper is too much, hypo is too little - it is hypothyroidism that causes the coat to fall out or grow slowly.
