Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Best Puppy pen/setup for large litter

As you will already know from my previous post, we have a large litter. We are trying to work out the best way to house the pups inside so that they have enough room to play/sleep/feed/toilet. We already have a medium sized crate which would be ideal as a bed area for the pups, but want to get a pen big enough to comfortably house them. Any ideas/suggestions? They will have daily acces to the yard.
Thanks x

I don't like crates for puppies etc personally. Depending on the size of the breed the Croft Freedom playpen with the extension panels are excellent.

What are you currently using?  Do you have a whelping box?  As the weeks go by I add a run to the box so they have much more space.  On fine days they go outside - I've an undercover area - depending how warm it is they can stay out for most of the day as they get older.
I also do not like crates - I'd be worried they could catch their little paws in them when starting to play etc.

They are in a large whelping box at the moment. It really isnt suitable to extend as the sides are too low. I have been looking at getting a croft showman pen any good? my litter is 11 small gundog pups.

depends on size of breed I guess. For terriers we use a four 6x6 feet panels in a square and ferry them in and out of it (its on the lawn) during the day. however for the hounds I bought one of those American  (  :(   )pens that are 15 feet long and 5 feet wide and its about big enought up to 8 weeks,

We recently had 9 large breed gundog pups. I purchased a roll of wire fencing about 18 inches high from Wilkinsons (£12) and some large metal pins from the builders merchants £1.50 each. We managed to build a temporary run for the puppies which, when using the wall of my garage, was about 15 foot x 10. I used tent pegs to pin down the sides to the ground, and an old stairgate as a gate so we could get in and out. It worked excellently, gave the pups loads of space to run about on the grass. Inside, we cleared out a room 12 foot square, which had a tiled floor, and as pups got bigger, just had a dog gate at the doorway. It became "their" room for the duration, although they came into the kitchen also.

It doesn't cost much just some imagination. All pups had plenty of space inside and out, luckily for us they were outside most of the time by the time they were about 6 weeks, which really helped with their house training in their new homes!!

Oh, and during the hot weather, with the sun moving across the sky, I would hose down the concrete or lay wet towels down for them to lie on, and dug the gazebo out of the garage for extra shade. Worked a treat!
