Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy being sick

Hi

Teddy was sick this morning a couple of times; he wretched a lot and then vomited.  It was yellowy in colour and a bit foamy (sorry this is disgusting!).  Am just a bit worried as he hadn't eaten since last night so not sure why he was ill?  When i picked him up i fancied his tummy was a bit hot, but i could be wrong.  He slept on my bed last night so i know he can't have eaten anything this morning before he was sick.....he hasn't been sick since and has eaten his breakfast etc.

thanks

how old is teddy? If he has not eaten since yesterday and you feel he has a temperature i would take him to the vet today, make sure he has plenty of fresh water to drink.

The yellow foamy bile is typical of a hungry dog -he probably was sick because he hadn't eaten yet. :) Many dogs throw up yellow bile when their tummies are empty.

Is he ill ?
Is he sleepy/lethargic, less playfull than normal, showing any signs of discomfort/pain/distress/dehydration/panting/restlessness?
If he vomited that one time and is fine in all other ways, happily ate his meal and kept it down, then I would just keep an eye on him, it could well be that he was just hungry (dogs can vomit if they are hungry) but if you think he is his hot or is acting different than normal it's best to get him checked by a vet.

ETA, Marianne got there first!

Thanks guys

He is nearly 6 months old Gemini.

He ate all his breakfast and did a couple of poos, all normal.  Is fine in himself, not panting/lethargic, running around like a loony as normal (interspersed with bouts of kipping at my feet!).  Not been sick since this morning.  Thanks for the advice, i will keep an eye - do you think i should take him to the Vet's just in case?  They are doing a 4-5pm surgery.

it is your decision at the end of the day whether to have him checked by the vet :) but if he has eaten and is acting normal for a 6 month old puppy then just keep a close eye on him :) as others have said, if he was showing signs of being ill, tired more then usual, high temp, not eating etc then seeing the vet would be in order :) x

It sounds as though he was just sick because he was hungry, but if you want to take him to the vets to make sure, you can do. Do your vets give any advice over the 'phone? That may be enough to put your mind at rest, our vets will advise over the 'phone as to wheather a pet should be brought in for examination or wheater it's OK to monitor at home.

Thanks a million.  I'll call my Vet and report back.  I feel a fool for posting now as have just read the "Genuine Question" thread.

There is nothing wrong with posting about concerns for your dogs health :) please don't feel bad for posting. Your pup was not in need of immediate medical attention, I'm sure if he appeared obviously very ill to you, you would have just taken him to the vet. All he did was be sick and you were concerned, nothing wrong with asking for advice here for that :)

Thanks for that, feel much better now.  Just want to do the best by him.

Its a coincidence that you ask this.. I had 3 of mine throw up yellow bile this morning.. My lot a usually fed around 7/8pm but I was going out last night.. so fed them around 4pm, normally when I feed them early, they get a dentastix or something similar before bed.. but last night they didnt.. so the gastric juices were churning this morning.. this is possibly the reason Teddy was sick.. nothing sinister.. although if you are worried, as others say.. a trip to the vet will put your mind at rest..

Thanks for that kayc; it makes sense that he was sick as a result of being hungry because i fed him earlier than usual the night before and thinking about it he didn't have as many treats as usual either, ie chopped sausages etc which prob fill him up a lot as he's only little.

I did 'fone the Vet and she said exactly the same thing as all of you - ie that he was probably hungry - to keep an eye but she wasn't concerned as he was in good spirits otherwise.

Thanks all for your advice, really helps.
