I have an 8 month old staffie who seems to have developed an itchy spot on his chest.  I have tried a couple of different creams on him.  Exmarid (which I might add absolutely stinks) and a Johnson's teatree cream.  Every time it looks like it is clearing up, he scratches it again and makes it red.

He has scratched so much that he now has a bald patch on his chest and the skin is becoming thickened!  He has been to the vets a few times over the last 4-6 weeks not specifically for that but the vets have looked at it and just told me to keep using the creams I have.  When I took him last week the vet said something about staffies sometimes have this problem under 1 year old and he should grow out of it and to keep using the creams he did not seem to want to give him anything else.  It is not something I have heard of before, but any advice would be welcome.

I was also just wondering if it is safe to use human creams on him such as Sudocreme or E45.  These always seem to do the trick when I have any dry itchy areas and maybe they might do a better job than the ones I am currently using.  If I could just stop the itching then maybe he would stop scratching enough for the skin to heal and the hair grow back.

Thanks in advance.

May not work for you,but always works for my dogs is to trim the hair away around itchy spot to let it breathe and rub in aloe vera gel.

You can also use Calendula Cream - it is a natural cream and you'll find it in most health shops.  It's worked a treat when my dogs have needed it.

Have they taken a scrape to test .. could be demodectic mange, which can be a localized area.

Have a look at this and read the posts that follow.

Thanks for all you replies.  Thanks for the link blue, unfortunately the pictures on that site look very much like Jack's patch of skin, it is also in almost the exact same place too.  Do you know if there is any other way of getting rid of it other than that horrible wash they were talking about?  Funny thing is the staff on the pictures looks remarkably like Jack, exactly the same colour!

Advocate will treat it. Read a lot of success with it AND you can continue using this as a flea and wormer. Talk to your vet.
