At a Open show  we went to, there were no puppy classes, so we went into post graduate, anyway we got  reserve :), looking at the critique it said "shame the puppy in the class didn't come back for best puppy" ??? Doh!!
Why would we get best puppy if there is no class?
I'll get the hang of it eventually!! :)

as there was no P class  you were the highest placed puppy on the day.!!! assuming there wasn't a puppy entered in Open, if there had been and you hadn't met you would have had to challenge each other for BP..... steward should have told you IMO .........

Aw, what a shame! The steward should certainly have told you. Any puppy unbeaten by another puppy can challenge for BP, so even if there was a Puppy class, if you were the highest placed puppy in your class you could have gone in to challenge.

It happened to us once also - when you're new there is a lot to learn isn't there?  The steward should certainly have told you, and called you back into the ring when the time came.  However, whilst you are still a puppy it's always worth checking the catalogue before you go in to see what other pups are in the classes with you.  You can also mention it to the steward too, whilst they check your number off against their list.  I noticed that they were always pretty good at spotting pups in young classes but in the older age classes they don't always seem to check.

Was there another pup to challenge?  If so, it sounds as if you might have got a good result :)

Does the puppy not have to have gained 3rd place or above to get BP?  I always assumed that the highest placed puppy regardless of its placing got BP but was told a couple of years ago that it had to be 3rd or above?

We have another open show coming up with the same classes, so will make sure we tell the steward this time :)

I think i still have the catalogue, will hunt it out and have a look :)

Awww I know how you feel, we have just started showing our Irish Setter Ruby, and sometimes its all very confusing! I hope that when Geoffrey our 12 week Irish Setter is old enough to show we will be a bit more knowledgable!

I agree bad stewarding when I have stewarded for a judge or even when I have judged I have checked whether there are puppies in the classes if there's no puppy class as a lot of shows are now starting with Junior.

Not at all -it's the best PUPPY and if it's the only puppy there, and no puppy class, it will be BP whether it had any placing at all or not.

I always though at the very least you had to be placed in a class?  Never heard of you having to be placed third or higher though.

No, you dont have to be placed, as long as you werent beaten by another puppy, you can challenge for best puppy

Nope...I got Best Puppy (well, not me personally :)) a couple of weeks ago when all we had was an Open class and as it was full of some very nice and fully mature dogs both puppies were unplaced, so they were then able to challenge each other for BPIB.

I think one of the most amusing things I ever saw was Cavaliers at an open show. Very unusually there was no Puppy class - just a Junior - and none of the puppies (of which there were a great many) in that class were placed. After all the classes had been judged all unbeaten puppies were called back in for Best Puppy and I kid you not, there were about 14!

this happened to me a while back now and I actually challenged the steward who said no I wasn't entitled to bring my pup back for BPIB.I did disagree with him,but left.A couple of times since this has happened again but as I have become more knowledgeable I have stuck to my guns.Sadly this included a Championship show in April,which I would have expected better standards.I was waiting by the ring to go in for the BPIB.Judgeing takes place for B.D and B.B and subsequent reserves and etc I wait,judge gets a call to judge the stakes asap,disappears at a rate of knots,I corner the steward he goes 'nothing in the catalogue about BP'.I then hurry over to the secretaries office who said of course there is a BP - Silvana was the only puppy.She got a rosette (BTW came second in Post grad bitch) and was eligable to go on to the group.By this time she missed the photographer,O.H was fed up ,pup was fed up - it was her first show as just 6 months so we went home!!!
