I'm not familiar with the dog or the tv series but enjoyed the clip, gorgeous dog :-)

I'm not either. I gather it's a german TV series, but even allowing for TV editing etc, such a gorgeous dog.

Well that was one neat looking pooch and a lovely mover too, obviously a lot of stage management and cutting went on but even so the dog looks good. How come they do it so natuarally and we have to apply lots of slap :)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_O0r3iLo8CSE/R6rj1AjfLNI/AAAAAAAAAGw/EbFir7v2674/s320/German_shepherd_dog_pics_2.JPG

so why do they look so defferant and which way is the right way they should look

Prefer the first dog tbh, though to *my* mind the way hes stacked (im sure its not called that in GSD circles) is extreme and contributes to the sharply sloping topline.

The dog in the other picture is not stood in the traditional GSD show stance, so his back does appear more level BUT even so notice how wide his back legs are spread.. why is that? That to me suggests some weakness in his hindquarters which in addition to his front and head conformation (LOOKS to be heavy in the head and through his shoulder/chest) makes me not like him.

I say these things from a horsey persons understanding of sound conformation for a quadruped though... (though granted dogs and horses do move differently the basics have to be pretty similar) and NOT as any kind of GSD person.

Love the dog in teh vid, though how you can decide he has a level topline from that I do not know, as again you are not seeing him stood or gaited from the side.. so impossible to judge.

right lol affraid thats all a lil bit to Technical for me, I am by far no expert just  prefer the ones that don't slop down at the rear end suppose  its  just a personal choice really,
I was reading the other thread last night on GS and the KC and am learning a little still unclear which one is how they are really meant to be and if the ones with the slopping back has been breed to deliberately exaggerate the slopping then why would anyone want their dog to look like that as someone else said on their they look deformed it just don't look natural,
But then im no expert its just how i see it  ,
So I could be very wrong and the slopping back maywell be exactly as they are ment to be but I new a guy as a kid who had these dogs he had 4 and we used to play with  them on our local grass they were very well trained dogs and always  got a lot of attention when he had then out as he would have them do tricks and stuff  they were very clever and none of them looked like that slopping one,
I just don't like the way their rear ends are i like the straight back better,

Tohme has a super young dog from VPG lines & TBH I prefer the HGH(Herding dogs-ie the dogs that work stock for a living) & VPG(German working dog tests dogs) to any dog bred just for their external appearance. However even if a dog is solely a working dog, it should look like it's breed.

Chelzeagirl

Have a look at this, a history of the breed and how it has changed, not for the better over the last 60 years. It shows both American and German Lines. It is a sad, sad indictment of what has been done to the GSD. I may post it separately too, as others may not pick it up on this thread. It has been a subject of hot debate on this board on many occasions:

I don't think the second shepherd with a level topline in your link is a particularly good example, but I get your drift. BTW, to earlier poster, you can tell that Kommisar has a level topline in various shots. It is very clear that he doesn't have the now prevalent 'roach back'.

Chelzeagirl, I'm with you.

that was great. what a lovely head on rex.
- By chelzeagirl [gb] Date 29.07.09 10:21 UTC
wow the earlier ones look great they are like what some guy had when i wasa kid in the 1970's they look wonderful so much better than the ones of today,
so who decided on the change and why does anyone know,
- By Whistler [gb] Date 29.07.09 10:52 UTC
I think its really sad to see the modern dogs they looked deformed against the earlier breed.
I remember them from my childhood (Im still afraid of them!) but they were even then beautiful, now they IMO look odd.

Ditto whistler im with you ,
i just dont understand why people had to change them i mean who in their right mind thought that was a good look,
