Hi All,
I have an Olympus E-420 DSLR and being a bit of a keeno with my new camera wondered if anybody could tell me what would be the best lense for taking pics of dogs, mainly at shows?
Thanks,

Jeff.

Hi Jeff

I'm on a really friendly photography site, www.yophotographer.com  You could ask the question on there or I'll post it for you.

not being familiar with the make or model I can t say, however "at dog shows" really doesnt tell us much....do you mean indoor or out door? sitting portraits or moving shots? Obviously you need a fast lens (2.8 etc) for indoor/moving stuff. if going for a 3rd party lens then sigma are prob the better one of the bunch!

I don't want to hijack your thread, but can I ask a bit of advice?  I'm a keen photographer and take loads of photos of the dog and my little girl (not necessarily together).  I  know absolutely nothing about taking photos apart from point and shoot, but love the quality you get with an SLR camera.  Do you think it would be worth me getting one if I were to just use it as a point and shoot, as I've no idea about setting up an SLR camera?  I also keep my camera in my bag most of the time and SLRs are too big to do this with so I'd still be using a point and shoot for some photos.

Thanks for any answers and again, apologies Jeff for butting in.

Here's one of their replies Jeff, agrees with Sam's of course.

Depends how close he can get to the dogs really PD. If he can't get very close he may want something like a 55-200 or 70-200. Not sure what the Oly equivalents are but the faster the better (lower f number = faster)

They are big but must admit I do take mine out and about quite a lot.  Just love the quality that you can get from a dSLR, not that I'm a good photographer though!  I love my Canon.
