Topic Dog Boards / Health / Maggots in the wheelie bin!
- By Precious_stone [gb] Date 24.07.09 20:23 UTC
Hi guys,

I hope you lot don't think I'm being nuts here, but just wanted to put my mind at rest.....

Tonight I went to put something in our wheelie bin, and the inside was crawling with maggots! Yuk! Give me spiders, beetles, worms anything, but maggots ooooohhhh nooooooo! (Cringing and itching like a mad woman!)

Now my OH has put some fly spray in there to try to eliminate them, and we will continue to do so everyday until there are no signs, but I am worried that the pesky little things could have an effect on the dogs. I know that maggots eat away at flesh as in open wounds etc, but my three are perfectly healthy and have no wounds or anything, so will they be ok?

I know I seem like I'm being stupid but our youngest is only 11 weeks and at such a young age I'd hate for him to get poorly, well obviously I'd hate for any of them to get poorly.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

As long as you don't keep the dogs in the wheely bin they should be fine! ;)  the same thing happened to a friend of mine who dumped mince in the outside bin and some flies were in and got busy.  Disgusting but nothing to worry about.

I think the dogs would eat them given half a chance...I know at least one of mine has snacked on maggot infested carcass of goodness-knows-what in the past with no ill effects (the other is  fussy eater but has no qualms about rolling in such horridness).  It's just another protein source as far as dogs are concerned. So, no, maggots should pose no harm to the dogs at all.

Thanks guys, I like to think that I am usually quite a logical and sensible person, but sometimes I know I do worry unneccessarily over my "babies"! :-)

Naturally disgusting thing for a dog to do!  YUK!!  :-)

Like ShaynLola, I don't think that it is going to kill them!

Lol, I knew when I typed that I was overreacting, I just have a big problem with maggots, yuk! And it's not even like I'm one of these silly giggly girls that can't even look at a spider, they don't bother me, just have a problem with two things, fleas and maggots! Eeeeeewwwwww! I'm still bloody itching and it was over two hours ago we found them! :-)

Emma - It ridiculous isn't it, I'm not one for complaining about the council, but the general waste bin really should be collected weekly, especially in the summer!

Yep its awfull Going through black bags like anything!!

Not nice sitting in the garden when there are flies every where even though im sat miles away from the bins

I have bigger problems have rats under the shed- they dont seem to want to eat the bate or live their accomadation!!! I have a phobia of them- keeps one of the dogs happy and entertained!!
- By Precious_stone [gb] Date 24.07.09 21:26 UTC
Urgh yuk, forgot about rats, can't stand them either, I don't mind mice but rats aren't my cup of tea. Have you tried chocolate or peanut butter in the bait? (I was watching Ratcatchers last night!) apparently these are their favourite things.

I'm having major issues with flies, which is obviously where the maggots have come from, but not sure why, I do "dog poo patrol" as I like to call it at least three times a day on our garden.

So annoying!

We've had the maggots a couple of times even when double bagging things.  I now take any meat left overs and put them in the town bins as they are emptied twice a day during school term and once a day when they are on holiday.  Cured my maggot problem.

Try liquorice toffee to catch mice they absolutely love it.  Caught a whole family in a couple of hours once using it.

Yeah nicki i was brave and watch that programe , I have the " rat man " come out, i am not going no where near the shed, Though the rat man thought sally should go and work for him as she showed him where they were I just want them gone

Thankfully we have a poo bin near us - so poo patrol is a bit easier for getting rid, having three dogs though small seems like i am always out there

I will have a nervous breakdown if i see them , mouse or rats

I am constanlty watching the dogs and have limited access to the garden so they can get to any dead rats

My Border found a litter of  baby mice the other day under our wheelie bin, having said that she killed them straight away, she has a excellent nose on her!
I too hate Maggots makes me sick seeing them, unfortunatley the ferrets hutch has them when I clean them out as they store old meat etc,, makes me gag cleaning them out!
I would rather they didnt get meat,, but being carnivore's I dont think its fair.

I have a spray bottle of Jeyes fluid ....everytime I pop anything into the bin - even though its bagged - I give a quick squirt of Jeyes at the same time

We had the same problem.  We were on holiday the week the bins were due to be collected, which meant (as we have fortnightly collections) that the bin hadn't been emptied for a month.  I really think, given that people go away over the summer and that it is hot, weekly collections should happen over the hot months.  Someone told us to put some newspaper at the bottom of the bin and pour bleach onto it so that it's soaked.

We have a company that comes around after bin collection and they clean the bins.
We have to pay something like £68 a year but small price to pay in my opinion.
- By billybob105 [gb] Date 26.07.09 07:28 UTC
We don't have dustbins where we live so everything is just left in the bags, you can imagine what's its like during a hot spell, saving grace is we have weekly collections.

Hi all!

Thanks for your responses and ideas!

I think I might try that with the bleach paper and jeyes fluid, since I found the maggots I have just been spraying fly spray in there two to three times a day, but obviously they are hatching all the time, there isn't many in there now, but I can't wait for the bin to be emptied on wednesday! The gross thing was as I found them my OH was serving up tea, bloody rice of all things! I couldn't eat it!!

Someone did tell me that you can get a thing from the council that you stick under the bin lid that deters them, has anyone heard of anything like this?

Thanks guys.
