I was just reading a post "how to be diplomatic". Discussing a 'society' actively breeding malamuteXGSDXhusky, to develop a dog that resembles a wolf. There was a link to the societies website, so out of curiosity I took a look. The society state they are trying to get the KC to recognise the breed etc and give it KC status...is this possible? I notice they also advertise up and coming litters and have a 13week old puppy in need of rehoming already. I feel abit uneasy about all this. Am I wrong? Is it acceptable to introduce a new breed in this day and age?
Ignorant and worried about the pups,
Julie

to be honest I don't see the point. there are already two breeds recognised by the FCI that have been developed from GSD and wolves. Met them at the World show. One is a dutch breed, and the other developed in Checoslovakia. One is called the Saarloos wolfdog, and the other the Chexh wolfdog, but not sure of the nomenclature of the latter!

Yes, this is my feeling. I just like reassurance really that they wouldn't breed numerous pups in a bid to get KC status. Would any of the breed clubs involved in the mix get involved? Are these dogs likely to get any assistance should this society fail and disband and the dogs end up in rescue? As you say there are already similar breeds, would the KC acknowledge this? Would anybody have the authority to step in?

If you look at how long it took the Jack Russel terrier and the Border collie to get recognition then they are a long long way away. If their aim is to eventually establish a breed and if there is something which the breed can contribute to dogs then good luck to them but I'm very sceptical of all "New" breeds as most of you will have seen from past posts. My thoughts on far and away the biggest number of these so called attempts is that its just being used as a way of charging people over the odds for what is in effect a mongrel.

How very sad!
I don't think you are ignorant at all Julie, and you are very right to be concerned about the pup's.
Don't know why people have to do this type of thing.
But I do think the KC should come down hard on them for mucking about with sound reg'd breeds!

IMO until a mixed breed has bred true for a number of years and the offspring of whatever pairing resemble that of any other pairing then, if the situation continues for say another 10 years it can be said to be a new breed. Then an approach can be made to whatever kennel club for reconitision. On top of this the 'new' breed should have something to offer that an exitisting breed does not. (sorry about spelling)

Julie,

Admin started this thread on Cross Breeding a while ago. You might find it of interest too :-)

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I took a look at the link Leigh, but I'm still not clear if any official body has the power to intervene. Am I missing the obvious?
Julie

No one can do anything. No laws are being broken. Whether it is ethical is a different matter. As far as the recognised breeds are concerned, nothing done with crosses can affect them except maybe in as far as any bad temperaments of the crosses being blamed on the original breeds. The troubles with the recognised breeds are (I believe) in the main caused by poor breeding, people mating unsuitable bitches to poor quality dogs. Again, there are no laws being broken. Our only hope is to try to educate people who express a desire to breed. I've said it before:- The breeders of the future can only breed with the dogs we leave them and if those dogs are blind cripples with poor temperaments, what a terrible legacy we will be leaving!
