hello my sister has just rescued an 18 month husky bitch called Inka she is doing well with her but is having a few issues with Inkas eating habits, she is a very fussy eater at the moment she is on a complete biscuit but will only eat this every other day she has been looking at other diets and came up with nature diet, what do people think of this diet? Do you think it is compatible with a Husky? If not has anyone got any reccomendations on what my sister can use?

Unless she wants to make a rod for her back and assuming the bitch is fit and well (she should be lean and fit) then I would not be fussing if she eats every other day.

I would cut her food down and see if that helps her eat daily.

It is very easy to overestimate the amount they need.

Hi

Huskies are notorious for being picky eaters and this is a common problem particularly in young siberians. Normally I'd recommend she keeps her on the food she's used to for a few weeks at least until she's settled in. However if the food she's on really isn't suiting her then I'd change over now but do so gradually over 5 days or so to avoid an upset stomach.

I don't know nature diet myself so can't really recommend it or not, but I think quite a few people on here feed it. Any good quality complete food or BARF diet will be fine, but it's usually a case of finding one that suits and then sticking to it. We feed ours Arden Grange Lamb and Rice which I'd recommend and a lot of husky owners feed it. It also contains probiotics which I find helps their appetite and digestion a lot. There are lots of other good brands though, but avoid any cheaper supermarket own brands etc.

Huskies do tend to eat less than other breeds for their size so she may be overfeeding. I'd try putting a smaller amount down, twice a day and leave down for 15 mins or so and if she doesn't eat it, remove until the next meal time. Once she's eating normally then increase the amount very gradually until you find the right amount for her. The best thing is not to pander to them as if you keep offering different things they will just hold out for something more tasty. Increasing her level of exercise might help increase her appetite as well. It might be worth cutting out treats for a while or just giving kibble as a treat.

Providing she's happy in herself then it's best not to worry about it too much (although that's easier said than done).

When she first got Inka she was being fed supermarket cheap food (anyone that was on offer) so not a stable diet.
She is now on a complete food but will not eat the larger biscuits so this will be her last change and in future will stick to this diet.
We can feel her hip bones but doesnt feel skinny and is very active having lots of exercise (at least 2hours daily is this about right?) and very well in herself.

I use natures menu for my 2 poodles as I have one that is very fussy as I had already tried nature diet which the fussy one did not like. I use the tins of natures menu as again the fussy dog didn't like the pouches as much, I have to say the consistency of the pouches was very different to the tins and having spoken to my vet she wasn't surprised as she reckons that dogs do have a preference where consistency is concerned. Unfortunately the tins are not readily available from pet shops so I bulk buy from Berriewoods.co.uk, which also works out a bit cheaper.

Does she soak the food? We always put a bit of warm water on and soak it for 10 or 15 mins.

2 hours walking a day sounds fine. She would probably take a lot more as it's difficult to tire a husky out by walking, but they are usually fine if you stick to a level they are used to.
