Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How long between pups?
- By Rubysmum Date 21.07.09 09:18 UTC
My bitch was scanned with 8 pups by someone with a good reputation for accuracy. She has had 6  fairly quickly but has not had one now for 2 hours. She seems settled and is feeding the puppies. her stomach has gone down a bit. how will I know if she has finished or how long can she safely wait before another pup should come?
- By bucksmum [gb] Date 21.07.09 09:37 UTC
I have whelped 5 of my own litters and several times have had a long pause between pups.(large breed),once having a gap of 6 hours after having been vet checked and told she had finished!I would say that so long as she hasn't been pushing for 2 hours i wouldn't panic yet.

She is not pushing and seems settled. the vet said she thought the scan could be wrong and if she hasn't had a pup for 2 hours then she would be finished. The Scanner said she may wait for 4-5 hours and then could start again and probably hasn't finished yet.
These pups are all smaller than my first litter which only had 4 pups and mum still seems quite big to me which makes me wonder if there are more to come, but I wasn't sure how long to wait before worrying

I cannot comment on scans being wrong as i've never had my bitches scanned, but the majority of my pups have been approx. an 20 mins apart for first few then slowing down to sometimes 1 or 2 hour intervals.I would agree with your scanner more than your vet.I have found that 'wee break' round the garden sometimes gets things moving again. If she is not straining or contracting i would personally wait a bit longer.

when I had a large breed all were born around 1/2 hourly intervals then she settled, hubby was on watch while I went to pick my kids up from their friends, when I came back counted pups and there was 1 more this was 4 hours after last pup.  Again she had been in garden and had a good walk round

She had been taken out a couple of times but didn't seem to do anything to get things moving. Then at 11:20 another girl was born, just after I  left the  house to take other dogs for a quick walk leaving son in charge. 3.5 hours after last pup. Wonder if that is it now?

I guess that it will depend on breed, but I find it really is easy to feel any that are left.  And I don't prod and dig around, I find them easy to feel.

I once had a girl that had stopped contracting after her fist pup was born, and ended up going in to the veterinary hospital for an oxytocin jab.  She produced a pup after one jab, then stopped.  Eventually a second jab was given and she had another.  And stopped again.  It wasn't a vet that I was used to, and he seemed happy that she had finished.

I told him that I could feel another pup.  On examination he told me that he thought it could be the spleen.  Glad I was insistant, as he felt that he had to do a scan to prove me wrong.  First we saw a spine, and then a hearbeat!  :-)

Sonja is that you? If so GOOD LUCK and don't rely too much on scan numbers -with Rio last year I was told one or two and she had ten as you know, so anything can happen. Go on how Ruby acts. It can take ages though, Rio's ten took all day to arrive and I thought she'd finished many a time. If she wants to go outside, make sure to follow her to watch -Ripley dropped a puppy outside once when she asked to go out for a wee.

Fantastic,i'd get ready for number 8!!Good luck.

She is a medium-large breed. Sometimes I think I can feel something, then I am not sure. no more pups since 11:20. She did seem to be panting a bit after her last trip into the garden and has now gone to sleep.

Hi Marianne,  yes its me. I am not relying too much on the scan except that she was scanned by  someone who has a good rep for being accurate and she said AT LEAST 8. I don't know whether to assume thats it now at 7 or whether to ask the vet to scan her. I don't want to upset her by taking her to the vet but I worry in case there are pups left inside. Rubys mum was much easier, 4 one after the other. Mind you I hadn't had her scanned so didn't worry about numbers so much.

Just had another boy 3 hours after the last pup. I had a feel of her tum but I couldn't say I felt any puppies before the boy was born so no idea if she has finished yet.

So there's 8 now? I think she'll be fine. I went and checked my notes and it took Rio 8 hours in all. Maybe, rather than check with the vet, give Jan a call as I'm sure she will have good advice and a lot more whelping experience than the vet. :) What's the sexes by the way?
- By Rubysmum Date 21.07.09 15:15 UTC
Still 8. 5 dogs and 3 bitches, which is almost exactly what I wanted. She had the first 6 in 3 hours then 6 hours for the last 2. I have an appt at the vet tomorrow for the dew claws although only 3 have them so will get Ruby checked over then too.

Congratulations!Wishing you a trouble free next 8 weeks(if that's at all possible with puppies!!)
- By Goldmali Date 21.07.09 15:27 UTC
That's good -congratulations!

Obviously not finished. Just let the plumber in as between all this we have a water leak and when I popped in to check Ruby found another bitch so we now have 9. I have told her to stop now as that is enough.
- By Goldmali Date 21.07.09 16:08 UTC
LOL I kept saying that to Rio! I DON'T envy you all that lot for the next couple of months!!! Rest now while you can whilst Ruby is still doing all the poo clearing. ;)
- By Rubysmum Date 21.07.09 16:41 UTC
I just hope Ruby doesn't try to beat Rio. What is the record?
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 21.07.09 20:37 UTC
Lol my bitch isn't even in season yet and I've been having long talks with her about how I'd like 2 or 3 girls to choose between, but 4 or 5 in total would be plenty! :-D
- By Goldmali Date 21.07.09 20:41 UTC
Not sure about the record number but Liz had 12 in the litter from Lakota.
- By jojoama [gb] Date 21.07.09 20:43 UTC
Hi,
I have just had a litter of eight with number seven being born at 9.40pm at night and number eight being born at 7.40 am the next morning with no problem we thought she had finshed and out popped my fav little girl.
- By Rubysmum Date 21.07.09 21:01 UTC
Thankfully its now 10:00pm and we are still on 9 so hopefully that is one record we wont break. Actually I did see a website in the states where someone had I think 14 pups.
- By Rubysmum Date 21.07.09 21:03 UTC
Wow thats a long break. I hope Ruby doesn't do that. I am happy with what we have got now.
