Hi
Advice for a work colleague. Bitch in pup due to whelp in about a week.  Not regularly wormed (arhh) and seemed blank when I asked him if was aware of worming the pups. I said I would ask the experts for him as I have never bred before and my vet nurse knowledge may well be out of date now (20 years ago!)

So, basically I need to know if the bitch can be wormed whilst in pup (this seems like a matter that cant wait as he hasnt done her for ages) - product advise please.

How often to worm the pups and a which product to use (I know non-vet ones are not recommended as I would never use them) I always use drontal plus on my 2 every 3 months.

Any advise would be helpful, mine would have been for him not to breed as he has not got a clue, but he has so I want to guide him for the sake of the puppies.

Hi
The bitch has been hip scored as is vaccinated.  Unfortunatley, the owner is not aware of worm damage that is why I wondered if he needs to worm her asap.

Many people use Panacur to worm from day 42 of pregnancy to 3 days post-whelping, to minimise the worm burden in both mother and puppies. Definitely consult a vet as to what would be best to use at this stage.

Puppies (and dam) should certainly be wormed every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age til 12 weeks.

Panacur is licensed for use on pregnant bitches.  I Drontal my girls prior to a season starting, then Panacur them from day 40 of gestation and continue until 2 days post whelp.  This will ensure pups are born 98% worm free, and they can just get on and thrive.  Isn't the bitch owner aware that pregnancy hormones cause the worms?

Thanks for the info, all I have to do now is convince the owner to act upon advise.  The owner is clueless, I feel if i can just give some good advise then maybe we can make good of a bad job.  They dont even know when to wean or what age to let the pups go - I have guided them on that score.

Thanks again all.
