my bitch came into heat the middle of may... our male dog tried to mate with her... we didnt think alot about it because we didnt see them locked together.. we did notice that her nipples never went back down but she wasnt putting on any weight so like i said we thought nothing about it... a friend of ours is a breeder and she said they do stay larger than normal after they come into there first heat... about five days ago we noticed she has milk.. shes been acting strange... shes nesting... loss of appetite... walking around the house like she is lost... she doesnt want us out of her sight... i called the vet to see what they thought because she DOES NOT look pregnant... they told me to take her temp twice a day morning and night which i have been... at first it started around 101 and started going down to 98.4 to 99.1 and has stayed there for 2 days... ive been doing alot of research on the internet but im starting to get confused... some say the temp can go that low during a false pregnancy and some say it wont... we do have an appointment tomorrow with our vet but i want to be prepared... it is driving me crazy not knowing if we should plan on her still being pregnant or come to realization that it is a false pregnancy... can u please give me some advise

If you Left the two unattended at any time during her season then there is a high probability this is for real.

even more alarming it sounds like it could be her first season also ?? how old is the bitch? are the dog and bitch of the same breed also as your bitch may have complications (if the dog is a larger breed than herself or if she is still a puppy herself) you may well have to get her a cesarean which can be costly to say the least, but at least your bitch may have a chance of surviving this terrible situation.

A mating can happen in a split second and sometimes ties only lasts one minute -I had a litter (planned) after a one minute tie, that resulted in 9 puppies. You can even have puppies from slip matins (no tie). So if the dog and bitch were unattended at anytime for more than a minute during her season, it sounds very likely your bitch is pregnant -and due to give birth very soon. Some bitches don't look very pregnant, especially with a first litter. Why were they not kept separated?

they were left alone because we thought the male was to young... we are very new at all this we didnt think alot about it... but if they did mate we werent to alarmed either... thank you for replying to me... my husband has her at the vet right now... i will keep you posted

Let us hope that it is a false pregnancy - she will come into season again in six months time and you should have arrangements in place so that they cannot get together and mate again!

we had a false too, even tho ours was a planned litter.... she even went through a false labour, WITH contractions
