My dog snoop is now 10 a bull terrier which some have suffered this problem in the breed. When he was alot younger he suffered with sores on and in between his toes so with trail and error found a food that didn't set this off...he has been on the same dog food for 18 months he's coat lovely and white and no problem with spots on his head or feet until last week? I am inquiring why would this flare up again after not being an issue for him anymore? I'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow but as before they only give him steroids to help it so wondered if anything else could make it come back...I have asked my son if he has feed him any human food but says he has not??

Pet food manufacturers often change formulas without owners knowing. :(

Hi,

As well as the above, sometimes with dogs with allergies can be fine on a new food for a while and then can become sensitised to that food as well.  Either that or he could be having a reaction to something else - have you tried anti histamines?  I would wait and see what your vet says, hope you get it sorted soon.

Can he possibly have become allergic to anything else? Allergies can appear after years of not being affected. I ask because my dog has grass pollen allergies and has, in the last week had a big flare up, with the red, itchy skin between her toes, and oozing patches on her toes where we failed to spot her biting them. ..and this is after having had three different types of steroid injection a fortnight ago to try and reduce the effect over the summer.  The steroids do help - she would be much worse without them, but there is a lot of grass pollen in particular about at the moment. Cloudy skies, wind and heavy showers seem to make the pollen levels worse rather than better. Also, wet grass leads to wet paws, which, if the skin is broken (for whatever reason), obviously feel much more sore and itchy. Drying the feet really well helps, but may be painful too.

We use Fuciderm gel (from vet) on the sore spots, but have to put on little homemade cotton booties to stop the gel being licked off. Also Malaseb shampoo. I have tried to do without steroids, but the itchies get so bad that it just makes my dog miserable without them all summer. Overnight is an excellent time to dowse with Fuciderm and put on the booties (held on securely with double-sided velcro), but I had to re-gel and re-boot this morning, as she wasn't going to leave those itchy feet alone!

No solution of course, but just some management ideas.

Claire  (and Bracken the itchy fox terrier, who is currently sporting very fetching black cotton twill booties on her back feet!)

Used to have a x-breed that was on Repnor for about 7-8 years and then started reacting to it, itching etc, vet said that it happens sometimes, even over that long a time frame. we put him on JW and the reaction cleared.

Thanks for all your info guys....

Very interesting about the food hadn't thought of that, also the wet grass ! His feet aren't bothering him but his pet wifey tinkerbell is licking them for England so will get the vet to have a look see.

Thanks again xx
