hi i have a 6 week old shih tzu that i brought home from the breeder on wednesday 15th july 2009 and he was very happy and playfull how ever on friday are little male shih tzu puppy who we named dudley became poorly at about 10.30pm he started to have a very bad bout diarrhoea followed by 2 lots of sickness by 11pm he was pretty lifeless and was not responding to us at all so i decided to phone the vet because i really had become very concerned for are tiny little dudley and they asked us to take him along to the surgery when we got there she had a little look at him and decided to admitt him put him on a drip to get fluids in him and administer some pain relief it was a very long night without him we collected a very much brighter dudley on saturday and were told to keep on a diet of chicken and white fish for the next few day's which dudley loves (some how i dont think he'll be wanting his eukanuba back) since he has been fine but today to he has become very swallon around the tummy and has only done 2 tiny little pooh's which have been very watery i have givin him a small amount of puppy milk and plenty of exercise but still no sign of any hard stool i wonder if any1 could help or if i should call the vet again this is are first puppy and we love him dearly and dont want to see him in pain many thanks

you need to call a vet.

6 weeks is early to get a pup.

what sort of breeder was it?

could you also please add full stops to your posts, otherwise its hard to follow.

I'd call the vet again, puppies can go downhill so quickly,I wouldn't take any chances.Hope your poor little boy recovers quickly.

Definitely call the vet.

This puppy has left his mother far too young  and is at enormous risk of any illness becoming life-threatening very quickly indeed.

he is a 6 week old shih tzu named dudley
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.07.09 17:14 UTC
What sort of breeder did you get him from?

Was he from a home environment where you saw his mother, or was he from a commercial kennel?
- By carly [gb] Date 19.07.09 17:21 UTC
thank you very much xx
- By Gemini05 Date 19.07.09 17:36 UTC
yes i agree get him back to vets now, he is far too young to have left his mum :( puppies should not leave their mum until at least 8 weeks old and they should be fully weaned and have been wormed by the breeder, from the sounds of things this breeder has not done the right thing for the welfare of the litter :(

Hope all goes well at the vets carly.Personally i wouldn't believe anything this breeder has told you.She has let her pups go way to early to have the pups welfare in mind. Please let us know how she is tomorrow.
- By krusewalker [gb] Date 19.07.09 21:29 UTC
yes, but wormed with what?

product from the vet or product from the supermarket/pet shop?

>they think he could now have worms but the lady i got him from said he had been done

Your receipt will tell you the dates, product and batch number. Your vet will need to know this so that your puppy isn't overdosed with an incompatible product.

You obviously missed my question about the breeding establishment; was it a private house where you saw the mother with the pups, or was it a commercial kennel?
- By krusewalker [gb] Date 19.07.09 21:49 UTC
i think she missed this question a few times.

she did tell me what he was wormed with as it was her husband who sold him to us the lady was in bed with a headache
- By carly [gb] Date 23.07.09 08:37 UTC
it was a privite breeder and mum and dad were both there along with the rest of the litter these puppies were truly loved you could see that but were alloweed to roam in the garden and everywhere so0 its possible that he picked something up from there house not from mine the vets gave him more worming stuff and something to help his stools harden which is yet to work other than that he is growing sooo fast and soo full of life i need some tips on what else i can feed him other than chicken which he has been on since last saturday (18th) just to harden his his pooh many thanks carly xx

As the Chicken seems to be still running through him, if he were mine I would try a little steamed white fish  (not oily fish ;) )

None of my dogs can tolerate cooked chicken at all - yet they are fine if it's in their kibble - very strange!

The Bio Yoghurt should help too.

How much are you feeding him at each meal?   At his age he should be getting at least 4 meals a day - preferably 5 or 6.  His tummy is tiny so each meal needs to be small too - only about a tablespoon or two.   He will probably eat more than this but it won't be digested properly and will just cause more diarrhoea ;)

Hope this helps

thanks so much am feeding him 5 times a day a small amount some said scrambled egg i am unsure it all seems to much for his small belly what fish ould you recommend??
- By bucksmum [in] Date 23.07.09 14:23 UTC
What a relief for you carly, they are such a worry when they're small aren't they.Just a thought if you give scrambled egg make it with water not milk.Milk will make him loser and don't make it too 'sloppy'.Hope you can relax and enjoy your little man now x

Any white fish, cod, coley, haddock - easy to remove any bones ;)    You can buy packs of frozen blocks in supermarkets very cheaply ;) and they don't have too many bones, but you'll find them when you flake it anyway :)

Try him with a teaspoon or so at first just to make sure it doesn't make his tummy worse.
