Hello
My yorky has picked up a tick ( in all the years we have had dogs this is the first time ) the sack full of blood is now gone but the jaws are still in her chest.
How do I get rid of this without hurting her?
Thank you
Carol
P S she is 6years old.

Don't worry,it will probably form a lump and the body will expel it.Just dab with antiseptic for a few days.

Has it dropped off - or did you try and pull it off?    If the head is still there, then I would be inclined to take her to the vet's tomorrow as a precaution - she may need some a/bs.   You can also buy a "tick remover" from the vets - its almost like a little crochet hook - just put it between the tick and skin of dog, give it a twist - and hey presto - you remove the tick completely!

I knew i shouldn't of read this post as 2 days later whilst cuddling my dog i thought she had a bit of mud on her ear from over the fields looked and it was the smallest tick i'd seen, couldn't of been on there long, i smothered in vaseline and in about 20 mins i was able to just pull it off head an all with my nails and some tissue, then found another so did the same, now going to invest in a tick remover for my first aid box

Definately worth getting a tick hook so you don't need to put vaseline on it again, smothering them makes them more likely to transmit infection.

I too had never had any dealings with Ticks since 1989, not in all the time I have owned Elkhounds, yet got a couple on two of my pups in February.

Seeing as the pups only had access to concrete and bare earth I can only imagine they came from the hedge-pigs.
