She's a lot better thanks Nat :) The vet phoned this morning to say that she was doing very well, but could we come and collect her as she'd howled all day and all night - she started within minutes of my leaving :(
It turns out that the gasping for breath was down to her having been stung /bitten by something and the KC is not as bad as was first thought. I gave her some piriton syrup in the car on the way to the vets in the hope that would help and luckily it did. The vet did a chest xray when she'd got her settled and it was clear.
She was so pleased to see me when I collected her that she wet herself and nearly pulled the vet over trying to get to me.
She's still very weak and we've been told to keep her quiet - that's been fun :D - but she shouldn't suffer any long term effects.
Thankfully she's insured as the bill is nearly £300 - I've just had to pay the excess and the insurance company will pay the balance directly.
I've aged about 10yrs in the past 36hrs :(

We're not sure what it was that caused her problems but it could easily have been something she ate in the garden as she had soggy feet when she collapsed. When it stops raining and the fog lifts enough so I can see past my hand I'm going to go and have a look round to see what she might have picked up.
Holly says thanks for the kisses and shes sent you a special spaniel slobber :D

glad she feeling better Fi :D
Sounds lucky you had the piriton handy. I must admit I'd have been scared to give any incase it meant that the vets couldn't then use whatever drugs they needed to to sort her out because I'd never have thought to use it if I was thinking kennel cough still - that sounds confusing but hopefully you know what I mean
Just a thought but what do vets do when they have a dog they need to keep in like Holly who has Kennel Cough or an infectious disease - do they often have seperate isolation places? The vet I use has a very small surgery but it's linked to his parents house so maybe they keep some in the house in those cases ?

Hi Sara,
I did think afterwards that I shouldn't have given her anything but it was too late then of course. She was gasping for breath and her throat/mouth was quite swollen up so I figured it might help - luckily it did. I always keep some in my bag in case I end up near anyone with cats as I'm really allergic to them :(
She was kept in the isolation room at the vets but as they didn't have anyone else in for the afternoon or evening the vet was able to stay with her the whole time. She still howled though and the vet didn't get any sleep :D
Holly is completely shattered today and is snoring very loudly from the sofa :D

Dear Fiona,
I am delighted and very relieved to hear that it is not pneumonia :-) although, I am still a little concerned for Holly :-( You say in the other thread that she collapsed, barely breathing and that the vet diagnosed " a severe case of kennel cough that had dropped down on to her lungs" but later, changed their mind after seeing an x-ray? It is my understanding that once the fluid has dropped down on to the lungs, it can not just *shoot back up* again. Do you think it would be worth seeking out a second opinion? :-)
Personally, I would be trying to keep Holly's chest as warm as possible until you can get to see another vet. Have you thought about putting her in one of the childrens jumpers to keep her warm? Let us know how she goes :-)

Hi Leigh,
The KC/pneumonia (sp?) diagnosis was made before the vet had taken the chest xray or examined Holly. They knew we were taking her in with KC (we had an appointment for later that morning) so she just assumed that it was a very bad case. Still you know what they say about assumption. :(
I'm taking her back later today to see the senior partner for a check up so we should find out what's going on. As the piriton helped and the chext xray was clear the vet is now working on the basis that she'd been stung/bitten or suffered an allergic reaction to something and that caused the collapse. The only thing I can think off it that she ate something in the garden as she had soggy feet when she colapsed.
She spent last night wrapped up under the duvet with me and Chris and is now wearing one of Issys jumpers, thanks for the suggestion - I'd never have thought of that. She looks very sweet wrapped up in a pink bunny rabbit jumper :D
I'll let you know how she gets on,
Fiona

Fiona,
Your head vet told
YOU off for letting your dog chew the air freshener!!

Well I certainly hope you told
HIM off for letting an unexperienced vet, who had
never seen a case of kennel cough (!) take care of Holly! For all accounts Holly was a dying dog, that she did
not examine properly before passing a diagnosis. A diagnosis based solely on what
you yourself had claimed she had, before putting her on oxygen, a needless drip and in isolation adding to her distress! And what was the point in giving antibiotics for an allergic reaction  Surely everyone knows that they wont work for an allergic reaction??
Infact, thank god you gave her piriton .. you probably saved your dogs life .. even if you did risk *drowning* her by administering it, when she had collapsed and couldn't breath properly.
What sort of practice is this vet running? I think you should consider getting legal advice on this matter asap. Have you put in a claim to your insurance company yet? Be very careful Fiona, you don't want to put down in writing something different to what the vets have on record, or you could be held up for defrauding the insurance comapny.
What further tests does she need and why? I hope you're not having to foot the bill for these tests, after all the vet has admitted mis-diagnosis, so why should you pick up the tab!
Words fail me!

Well, we're back from the vets :) Holly is a lot better this morning and it seems that yesterdays collapse was the result of her stealing and eating an airfreshner :( I found the remains of one in the garden with teeth-marks all over it.
She's to remain on the anti-biotics for another 4 days and the vet wants to have her in and run some more tests in a weeks time to make sure she's not suffered any long term effetcs from her experience with the air freshner.

The vet we saw today was lovely - although he did have a right go at me for leaving an air-freshner around. He told me that we should have opened the doors and 'used natures air-freshner' rather than the 'horrible cheap things that smell worse than the dogs!!'
He was very apologetic about the vet I saw yesterday - apparantly this was the first case of KC she'd seen since she qualified and she thought that it always spread to the chest and became pneumonic (not sure if that's even a word!!) In the last 4wks they've had 3 dogs admitted with complications due to KC and she'd seen the admission reports and assumed it always gets that bad.

Hi fiona, I'm so glad she's better! I don't have airfresheners - they don't make any industrial strength ones to combat the smell of my 'orrible lots 'bottom burps' :D - but I didn't realise that they could be that dangerous!!! Julie:)

Hi Julie, a friend of mine's little boy was caught sucking on one of those plug-ins - I guess they're about the right height for crawling, my first reaction was the electricity factor I hadn't thought anything of the actual freshener part, but he had quite bad weezing for a while afterwards.

Date 25.11.02 16:16 UTC
Hi arwenwulf, I suppose it is obvious when you think about what must be in them, but up until now I hadn't ever considered it, even with the kids!!! I wonder if there are any warnings on them, with regard to giving breathing difficulties - and before anyone says - 'they all say not to be taken internally etc etc ' I do realise this, I mean breathing difficulties in particular :D julie:)

What was in the air freshener to make her collapse? Which sort was it?
Helen

Date 25.11.02 15:35 UTC
It was one of the disk air-freshners that you stick on the side of the loo, only we had it stuck on the side of the bookcase.
Where she'd chewed it, it had gotten all manky and the vet thinks she had an allergic reaction to something in it and her throat/mouth swelled up. As she's got KC as well her breathing wasn't 100% to start with so she really suffered :(

glad she ok,it such a worry, but at lease she smell nice,

LOL :) It was because she smelt horrible from the garlic 'botty burps' that we had the airfreshner out in the first place :( I think I'll have to get the odourless garlic tablets in future!

Hi Fiona
There was me being releived 'cos it was "just" KC rather than heart problems, distemper or any of the other things associated with coughing and you announce she has collapsed, even if it was not due solely to KC, perhaps I had better keep quite in future:)
What sort of air freshener was it?

Words escape me, Fiona. :( :) :(
I just read your two threads, so the whole 'saga' is rather overwhelming.
I'm relieved that Holly is ok and feeling better :) :D It seems that you saved her life with the piroton (sp?) Good for you!!!!!!
I'm ticked off at the jr. vet for making 'assumptions'
I'm annoyed at the Head Vet for telling you off.. Household items are not always safe and this could have happened to anyone. All that unnecessary medication and work-up for Holly that went on :( :( Are they still going to charge you/ the insurance company for the mis-diagnosis?
I'm also displeased about all of these different 'fragrance' (plug-ins & stick-ons) that don't have clearer warnings.... They tend to sit at child level, but 'safety' isn't really that much of a concern to the manufactures :( Everyone is using them these days. I wouldn't even think about them, except for what happened to Holly. Now I'll be much more aware of their toxicity and avaliability :(
Give Holly a hug :) I bet she looks cute in her jumper :D I'm happy for you that she'll make it through this :)
Toodles
