some breeds can go upto day 70 but if she shows any sighs of stress you must get her to the vets ,she may not be able to start herself , does she look stressed in any way? but if it was me i would just ring the vets to see what hes says (but thats me lol i worry when its time for puppies )sorry carnt think what its called when mum carnt start herself and pups and mum could die (been up since 4 with food poisoning )dont want to fighten you ,just be aware x

Hi,

I agree with the above, your vet will be able to give her an injection to get things moving along (can't remember what the injection is called). If it were me I would ring the vet, but, I also cluck like an old mother hen!

'Gestation has been reported to vary from 56 to 68 or 72 days dependant on the reference. Average is 63 days'

Here are two fairly recent threads on the same subject which you may find useful (CD's archived posts contain a wealth of info if you use the Search facilities)

Hi,
Get her along to the vets. Make sure they give her a good check. Better to be safe than sorry!!

if she is content and not acting stressed out in anyway then i would leave her alone to be honest, you say 63 days but that is from the mating, she could of concieved a few days after this and therefore is not as far on as you think.

I have only had any of my girls go 3 days over (from mating dates) and as long as mum is fine and puppy movement can be felt/seen i wouldnt panic yet.

As for the injection to get her started this is called oxytocin and should NOT be given before a puppy has been born to ensure she is fully  dilated as if she is forced to contract before she is ready she could suffer a ruptured uterus.

I am sure she will get on with it when she and her babies are ready

Good luck :)

i too wouldnt give any of my girl oxytocin till at least 1 pup has been born like mandyc as said !

how is she now? x

There is occasions it is used before puppies are born but that is the Vets call and certainly not in this case.

To the OP have you got temp readings?

I would wait at least another couple of days, had pups a number of days late and they've been fine, as have had pups a week early and they've been fine too.  Just keep an eye out on anystrange signs.

hiya,
well phoned the vet and he wasn't concerned at all, and said to leave until friday to take her in for a check up.
she's not been that interested in food today and has been sleeping in her box most of the day.
just hope that something happen's soon!
i will start worrying the more she goes over if everything is alright:-(

thanks everyone
kelly xx

Look for a temperature drop, for best results take it each day at the same time. You will know when she starts to get agitated that the birth will not be far away. Good luck!

It is called inertia, and yes very frightening, as a lot of people don't recognise it until it's too late.

I had the same worry as you a few weeks ago. My bitch wen't to day 67 and ended up havin a c-section. between day 63 & 67 I was going to the vet and telling him that I think she may need a c-section and he said not to worry and that to let nature take his course, but he was wrong!! I have found out accidently by another vet that she had 3 pups and one died ( they never told me she had 3 ) I was really angry at this as they should have told me what happened.
I know that some bitches have whelped fine on day 67 but if I was you I would get her to the vet.
