HI, We are hoping to breed our two dogs (toy breed) but, our bitch is on her 7th day and is standing however, our male who has never mated is so excited with excitement of the thoughts of breeding with her is knackered and goes on her for 2 seconds and then jumps off! He is 3and a half and she is 2 years old. We have had dogs all our life and just want to let our bitch have a nice healthy litter! Please help!

It's never a good idea to mate two inexperienced dogs together, especially not if you are not very experienced yourselves. You'd be better off waiting for the next season and use the time until then to do a lot of research, find a top quality stud dog with an experienced owner that can help you and mentor you. Breeding isn't easy and I know I could never have coped with my first litter had I not had the breeder of my bitch constantly available on the other end of the phone to help out, and managing matings is also very hard work and needs experience. Also your breed isn't the easiest (by the way we're not allowed to mention breeds here) and a friend of mine recently lost a litter of the same breed as there were problem when the bitch gave birth.

Hi, have your dogs had all the relivent health checks that the breed need? and are their pedagrees compatable? breeding isnt just about putting a male and female together and getting puppies, also if both dogs have always lived together sometimes that can cause problems with mateing, maybe as already stated get an experianced stud for your girl

It's not uncommon for it to be a problem trying to mate two dogs that live together.  Hence why most people use a stud dog outside their own home.

Are you leaving the two dogs together all the time or just putting them together at specific times?

|Sadly with said breed it is unlikely that she will have a happy normal birth.  You will have to ensure that you have a vet on standby to do a c-section, inform them well in advance.

I must have missed something - how do you know what breed it is?

I didn't see the original post, but from comments, it does limit which breeds it can be.

Certainly not the right breed for a first time breeder.   Most novices won't know how to deliver a stuck puppy, and you need to be able to do this, as it's too late by the time you arrive at the vet surgery.

And I would guess most first timers won't recognise inertia. 

Hi We.ve had our dogs health checked, have breed  from gun dogs many years  ago, Judy had eight healthy pups. we are not completely noviced only to this toy breed, both our toy dogs have great show potential and have done excellant at the shows and have international champion blood lines. I appreciate all replies and take everything aboard what people say  have read a lot of books recently to broaden my knowledge. Have already purchased a large whelping box etc,but if we are unsucessful this time ill get a stud in. tootsie is standing today day 9 and buster seems to be more keen than before. So you never know we may be lucky Thanks for your advise. Lynda

Our dogs our not together all the time and sleep in separate crates in different rooms. we are just putting them together every now and then as today toostie is whinning for buster so we let them play for a while to see what happens. We also have a 14 week toy dog who is very playful and plays with them both. Thanks for your reply. Lynda

So you are not 1st time breeders then are you?

And what health checks did you go through?
