hi, i am trying to find out if you can breed from a dog, which as a puppy had a 1-2 heart murmer and had cleared at 4mths old. i have been googling around and understand that you can use a bitch to a clear dog if she has a 1 or 2 grade but not a dog if its 2 or above. i dont understand as my dog pup grade was 1-2!!  hope that makes sense, murmers are not a problem in my breed so im just looking it up, many thanks.

i would take the bitch back to the vet just before being mated to have her heart checked again.

in my breed a lot of puppies have a slight murmer the first time they go to the vet but it clears up as they older.

i am no expert in this field but i am sure someone else will give you some more advice.

I would not do it - plain and simple - no!

A puppy with a heart murmur that clears ( ie a developmental 'flow murmur') has now not got a heart murmur!!

A vet check before mating is not adequate, a cardiologist needs to certify that this dog is now murmur free, then, and only then, can you say that this dog is fit to breed.

Agree with Tooolz - you need to have her checked - if it was a flow murmur and she is now clear, not a problem. If she has a murmur, sorry but no you shouldn't breed from her.

hi i am still trying to get to grips with posting on this forum. sorry i havent been clear with my post my dog(male) has had the 1-2 as a pup, my bitches are clear. i will have a chat with my vet about it if i cannot use him then never mind, thankyou so much for the replies. Donna.

Does not matter if it is the male or female that has the high murmur..  they should not be used  to breed from

A vet check as Tooolz has said, is not enough,  if your vet can still hear a murmur, you must see a cardiologist to determine what the score is
