hi there,

was just wondering your thoughts on wether my pregnant bitch who's 57 days now will whelp early?
she's looking very fat and sorry for herself her eye's are looking a little blood shot today?

she has stated weeing and poohing indoors? dont know why she is doing that? do you think she's scared to go outside at night? struggling to use the dog flap?? or wether its a sign that she will whelp soon?

she's been really grumpy towards my other dog have been trying to separate them when im not around:-)

thanks for your advice xx

Pups are normally born from day 58 onwards, that is entirely normal so you must not leave your bitch AT ALL now (that includes at night, you need to sleep in the same room), and she must be kept separate from your other dog all the time. Peeing and pooing indoors when heavily pregnant is perfectly normal, they just aren't able to hold it as before -just like pregnant women have to run to the loo all the time. Absolutely do not let her go outside at night on her own (OR during the day) as she could very well have a pup in the dark, it happens frequently that a pup pops out when the bitch thinks she just needs to wee or poo -when she goes out you must follow her now at all times.

Bitches normally whelp 63 days + or - a day from the day they ovulate so if you had her blood tested it is easier to know;)

Bitches can whelp anytime from 59 days onwards and earlier isnt unheard of, for instance jap spitzes are known to be early whelpers and my bitch had hers on day 59 yet other breeds are known to not whelp till day 70, but its fairly consistent to say  pregnancy last 62 days from ovulation but most people  guess at when ovulating hence the variation.

Hi,
My bitches welph at 57-58days, my one, had pink eyes and was scratching, also, would not leave my side, I was not happy, but! the vet left her untill 62days, (She had been in labour a week,) after my constant nagging he gave her a c/section to find the pups dead.
Breeds and dogs are diffrent.
Red eyes are a sign of pain, she is probly in slow labour. Also the larger the litter the earlier she may be.
Weeing and pooing is probly as the pups line up to be born. They press on the bladder and bowl, like they do in women.
She will warn the other dogs to keep away as she will not allow any dogs around her pups. As other dogs can kill them.
They other dogs must be kept away untill the pups are running about. A bitch will fight untill dealth for her young.

While there is no hard and fast rule, it is usual for movement to slow down  towards the end.
