Article here explaining:
From BBC's Working Lunch - Mobile phone directory to launch

It would seem, if you weren't already aware of this, we only have a week left to take number off the directory.
Certainly don't want spam callers on my mobile too :(

HTH!

- By bear [gb] Date 08.07.09 15:55 UTC
can't believe their doing this, my OH has already stopped our numbers being released but just think of all the people out their that don't want to get contacted for all sorts of reasons ie violent ex partners etc. just hope all these people have heard whats going to happen.

> i'm sick of home telephone calls

Oh,those landline calls are driving me bonkers too.If it's a real person,as opposed to an automated message,I sometimes say, when asked if they can speak to me-I'll just go and get her-then i sit back and check the phone a minute or two later. They never give up though,so it's just for my own satisfaction of the moment.
- By craigles Date 09.07.09 07:16 UTC
I've made myself ex-directory too and will ensure hubby does it when he comes home. x
- By Granitecitygirl [eu] Date 09.07.09 07:58 UTC
Has anyone received an acknowledging text?  I've send my E but have got nothing back to say my number has been removed?  I'm sure I read in the report we get a text to say it's been done.

> Has anyone received an acknowledging text?

No , i've not got one either .  I assume that means they can use your number then . Maybe the best way is to go on the website but i really don't see why we should go to all this trouble when it is our own number . You should have to opt in , not out .
- By Granitecitygirl [eu] Date 09.07.09 08:33 UTC
Absolutely, we should be able to opt in.  Maybe they are overloaded with requests though so it could take time for the system to get through them all.  If I get nothing this weekend I'll go onto the site - I hope the beeb hasn't given us duff information.
- By Pinky Date 09.07.09 08:36 UTC
I've done the E thing and no acknowledgment as yet.

Reading through the report it looks as though they don't actually automatically give your number out to any body that requests it, they phone you first to see if you will accept a call from the enquiring person. So it's perhaps not quite as bad as it may first appear although you could find yourself being pestered by the directory people.

Try registering with TPS that should stop them, unfort being ex directory won't :(

the TPS doesn't work on foreign calls, ie the call centres in India, had yet another one about 10 mins ago.

Nope i've not had a E text back either, hopefully soon.

I once told one of the foreign call people that we were TPS registered and they actually laughed and told me they weren't governed by them so could call when they wanted!

Thanks for that HG, ;-)

I certainly do not want mobile spam to go with the rest of it, my mobile is the one thing that feels safe, I know it is someone I know and want to speak to. I will be going bonkers if I start getting spam on it. I know that my husband has had a few dodgy calls occassionally, that is just what you want whilst driving (hands free of course) or in a meeting having your mobile on vibrate for emergencies and finding a double glazing guy or someone asking if you want a loan on the other end.   No Thank You!   Why don't they just leave us alone. :-(

I'm so cross about this!
- By sam Date 09.07.09 10:49 UTC
as far asi can teel they dont give the number out to anyone? also how on earth would you FIND the right person? If i wanted a mobile number for mrs jean jones then how many JJ are there? hundreds! if you have PAYG phones then the address wouldnt be registered anyway would it? mine certainly isnt!
- By poppity [gb] Date 09.07.09 11:00 UTC
I got no message either,so tried to get it done through their website.Got the security number i needed via text, but when i put it in the box to activate going ex-directory,guess what,a message saying that the service is unavailable!  tried again and this time didn't receive any message with a security number,so couldn't proceed. The whole thing stinks. It says on the website that they don't have the numbers of children's mobiles, well how do they know who the phone belongs to.
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 09.07.09 11:39 UTC
I wondered if this was a money making scam. I tried doing it on the website which sends a text to your phone but recieved nothing. i dont really want to waste my credit texting them if it isnt going to work - maybe thats what they want to do??!! If we all use our mobiles to text to go ex directory a)they've got our number and b) they've made a quick buck.

I went onto the website, and have so far successfully been able to make three of our mobile phone numbers ex-directory, it does work. We are all on contract that's the only reason why I bothered. I once remember someone saying why would you want to make your number ex-directory, what happens if someone wants to hold of you? To which I replied well, if they were that important they'd have the numbers in the first place lol :-D
- By diane74 [gb] Date 09.07.09 11:51 UTC
Thanks for this!
Our mobile numbers should be given out to who we choose.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 09.07.09 12:21 UTC
Good I might find out what my number is?
Its my pet hate I hardly ever stick the thing on, my OH has his stuck to ear 24/7. I know they are gret for emergancies, I do carry it in my car with me but Ive got to 54 without having it on in Sainsbury's, the loo, dentist, hairdressers, train, bus, taxi up the Eiffel tower and on the beach in the Maldives!
- By St.Domingo Date 09.07.09 18:58 UTC
CDers must have been busy - the site is shut for maintenance - or has it crashed due to people not wanting their number sold ?!!!
I just hope i manage to get all of ours done before the deadline .
- By St.Domingo Date 10.07.09 19:21 UTC
The site is still shut today !
- By poppity [gb] Date 10.07.09 19:32 UTC
All i've succeded in doing up to now,is give them my mobile number 3 times! And i've no idea when i'll be able to get it back off them-It's a disgrace on the government's part for allowing it to go ahead.
- By St.Domingo Date 10.07.09 19:40 UTC
I am a little concerned by this as i want to get our 4 numbers ex-directory but the website is down and i haven't had any texts back from the company .  I believe that there is a deadline to get your number off and i think it's before Monday .
I hope the papers get hold of this and push the company to put the deadline back .
- By poppity [gb] Date 10.07.09 20:33 UTC
I've just checked the site again, and it says that all requests to go ex-d are being proccessed, and there is no need to try again, but i don't trust them. What are we supposed to do?
