Topic Dog Boards / Health / Argh - Pip's well and truly in the dog house
- By mumofpip [gb] Date 08.07.09 10:54 UTC
We've had an incident before where Pip got to a bar of chocolate (Lindt it was too - no cheap stuff!), scoffed some of it and ended up in the veterinary hospital on a drip.

I am really careful to keep chocolate etc well away from her.  This morning I got back from the GPs and Pip came bounding up to me - I cuddled her and she smelt of chocolate and looked rather guilty!  There was no sign of any mischief in the kitchen but in the frontroom was chewed up pieces of a pack of Cadbury's hot chocolate and brown patches of chocolate on the floor where obviously she has been trying to lick it up but it's gone into the carpet - grrrrr.  The good news is she obviously didn't get much as there wasn't much paper on the carpet, although what there was was soaking wet where's she's been chewing it.  The bad news is I checked in her basket (where she stashes stuff) and found some well licked clean other pieces of the packet which were bone dry so the contents have been consumed before.  I think she pinched it from one of my husband's work bags (he works away and sometimes brings back sachets of hot chocolate for me).

She's such a norty girl.  We're meant to be keeping her on strictly her RC Hypoallergenic due to her IBS, so dread to think what this will do to her.  I don't think she's had anywhere near enough to worry about and after checking the website see that the amount of theobromine in hot chocolate is low which is a relief.  I'll keep an eye on her but she's lying in her basket looking very sheepish now.

Oh Pip, what am I going to do!!

I'm reading this nodding avidly!!

*Stands up* "My name is Olivia and I'm a choco-holic dog owner too" (in both senses!)

Storm is giving Pip the thumbs up... I'm giving him the 'Paddington Bear hard stare'!!!
Always the way....What they are not allowed is always what they want most *rolls eyes!*

No she's not a naughty girl - you're the naughty one for leaving chocolate around :) My eldest dog had to have his stomach pumped out many years ago when he opened, while I was at work,  a large package delivered that morning . Unknown to us it contained several very large boxes of chocolates (just before Xmas). We shouldn't have left it where he could get it :) Fortunately I came home at lunchtime and found the mess and rushed him to the vet. We are always very, very careful with anything chocolate now and make sure that it is well out of the dogs' reach :)

Treacle once opened a drawer in my bedroom and stole half a large bar of Cadbury's Turkish Delight Chocolate( my favourite choc ever). I was so proud of myself for leaving half the bar in the first place so I was really unhappy to discover she had scoffed the rest!!! Only solution - eat the whole bar at once!!

Looks like Pip is trying to tell you something about her Hypoallergenic diet :-D

When I said that I keep the chocolate out of the way, I meant I eat it :)

Aw! Come on she's a giel & we all need a bit of choc sometimes, I've had buttons today, norty girl I am!

In all seriousness I do hope Pip is okay, I hadn't realised chocolate could be so dangerous for dogs, I always thought it was just a no-no!!
