I want to fill a small bed with plants-it is 8 feet long 2 feet deep-it is against a fence that is in a shady area-there are a couple of big bushes in the bed-I want to retain.
Would like all year colour if possible-however I need hardy plants as once they are matured there are four dogs that do use the garden although we do try to keep off the soil.
Any ideas please.
Thanks
I would put Dog-wood's at the back as they can grow quite tall . I have the varigated ones with the green stems but i will pull them out eventually as the ones with red stems are better for Winter colour . Remember to trim them back hard in the Spring as it is the Summer growth that is coloured in the Winter .
I also have Astibles (sp) but they are only out in the Summer .
How about a Fatsia Japonica (sp) and some ferns or Pine style trees .
The garden centre will give you lots of advice - whilst taking your money !!!
A good idea is to nosey over your fence and see what is growing in the shade of your neighbours gardens , that way you know what will do well in yours .
Unfortunately i don't have green fingers and so am not of much help but good luck !
Hi
Crocus is an excellent site for information and planting ideas. You can specify types of soil and colour for full planting plans. You can order online too
A planned border is a gift to myself when I can find the time to prep a bed in our clay soil !! We think we need to hire a digger first... :)
